My BF did but they actually had a regular wedding and needed to elope beforehand for immigration reasons. I think maybe her dad was there as a witness. I wasn't offended or anything when she told me but it was a little weird to go to a wedding for a couple that had actually been married for months! It was very hush hushbecause she ddidn't want her family to be upset.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: that's so similar to my grandparent's story!! She was 16 Protestant, he was 21 Catholic and my great grandparents forbade them from dating. They eloped to New Jersey and then went back to their own houses that night. They revealed the marriage three months later when my aunt was on the way. Five kids, three continents, and 67 years happily married.

My grandparents did. I love this story!

My grandma (moms mom) had two older brothers and one younger. She was 14 when she met my pap, who was her oldest brothers friend. He was 19. My great-grandparents forbid her from seeing him because he was older and because he worked as a butcher in town. His nickname was Butch.

They were in love and snuck around. At 16, she "slept over a friends house" and went to New Jersey to marry my pap. Thy didn't tell anyone and she continued to live at home, go to high school and sneak out to be with him.

They didn't get caught until my grandma got pregnant. My great-grandfather kicked her out, but they later reconciled.

My grandparents were married for over 50 years. My gram had four girls by the time she was 20. My grandparents did reconcile with my great-grandparents & they went on to all love happily ever after. My great-grandparents played a huge role in my moms (and her sisters) lives, and my great-grandma was very special to me-- this baby is getting her first name as her middle!

It's my favorite love story!

I don't know anyone who did this, but just chiming in to say that as a friend, I'd be fine with it. As a sister, I would be a little hurt but get over it. But if my baby did this and I didn't get to go to her wedding, I would be totally crushed (oh yeah and she is one right now). Any way you can have just your parents there or anything?

I had to post because I started getting teary just thinking about missing C's wedding. Hormones much?

We did! It's our 2nd marriage for both of us and we had no desire to do the big wedding thing. My mom was very disappointed but she got over it pretty quickly since she also knew that we had a LO on the way. We'd planned the elopement right when we got engaged and pulled it off during a vacation 5 months later. My best friend knew but no one else.
We found out we were expecting our LO during the whole planning process so we kept it a secret and announced that along with our marriage announcement. I made cute cards and we mailed them that day from San Francisco.
I love that we eloped. It was totally the right fit for us :)

One of my BFF eloped, she called me right after to tell me, I was hurt as I was very involved in the wedding planning. (They then decided to fly out on a Tuesday and get married in Vegas.) Her parents watched it, but they were the only ones who knew about it because they knew her dad would not allow her husband in his home if they didn't know.

Two of my co-workers eloped but I wasn't here when it happened. It's just hear-say from other co-workers.

One of them went to Vegas but her family was there, she just didn't invite friends so it was a small wedding like 15 people. Then she sent an e-mail to the co-workers the next week and said btw I'm married now. I should mentioned that she basically engaged and married her husband in like 2 weeks so a lot of people didn't even know she was engaged.

The other one, everyone knew she was engaged and they would ask about when is the wedding and she said she's not sure. Then one day she took a half day and came in the next day and said I'm married, went to the court house yesterday afternoon. She didn't have any friends and family there but all her family lives far away and she says that her husband and her are not close to family or have any close friends which is why they did it that way.

Since they were co-workers everyone just jokes about these marriages as no big deal. I have talked to them and they said their friends took it rather well too, but their friends know the type of people they are and just weren't surprised how that went down. If that makes sense.

------------------------------------------

Another story is I am in a friend group from high school. You know how friends pair off to best friends? So even if the group is like 20 people usually you are very good friends with one or two of the girls in that group even though you all usually hang out in a group. Well one of those girls eloped and none of us were really upset except for her best friend from the group. They made up though so that worked out. I think she ended up making her best friend the godmother of her first born so that patched things up between them.

-------------------------------------------

I think people that really care about you will be understanding of your choice even if they are little hurt at the beginning. They just wanted to be part of a big day for you and you can't really fault them for that.

Good luck on your elope! It sounds like you are doing what's right for you.

I had a cousin who did this recently. 2nd marriage for both her and her husband and they are much older than the average newlyweds. The bride really wanted to get married on her mother's porch for sentimental reasons. The terrible part in my opinion though, was that the mother was home and they sent her in to take a shower (she has some physical disabilities so that can take a while) and got married without her knowing it while she was inside! When she was ready they told her and then went out to lunch to celebrate, but I think she was pretty hurt. I think she felt like they cared about her house more than her. :(

That story aside, I do support every couple's choice to get married how they choose!

For the people that I know that eloped - it was successful for them. I think it's the way you tell people (afterwards) that's most important. It all depends on your relationships, of course, but I think you should tell your parents/in-laws first (and in person is best), then family and close friends, and then everyone else.

My aunt eloped secretly 40 years ago. My mom was still living at home when it happened and talks about how devastated her parents were to not be at their daughters wedding.

Two years ago my cousin also secretly eloped. My aunt was devastated. She said she never understood why my grandparents were so upset and that now she unfortunately knows how they felt.

We had a small wedding ceremony ahead of our wedding with just our parents in attendance. It was very romantic and I was so happy that my family could be there. A few months later we had the big wedding and I LOVED that. If I had to do it again I'd just do the big wedding.

Congratulations to you!!

One of my close friends eloped when I was younger, and it did sting a bit at the time (I never told him though). But having been to a kajillion weddings at this point, I view it now as one less wedding I had to pay to attend!

I did. It wasn't planned so far in advance. We just decided on a Thursday to go get our marriage license and hire a notary to come over on Sunday. My parents were upset cause at the time we lived far from them and they couldn't make it. But, 3 years later, they're over it.

My SO and I are planning a surprise elopement for late December/early January and not telling ANYONE until we come home and send announcements. No parents, no best friends ... nobody. It's my second marriage and his first, but we really want to ditch the traditional wedding stuff in favor of a fantastic vacation, then get started having a family.

Anybody out there have any success or horror stories to share? Did you secretly elope and family members got mad, or did a good friend secretly get married and it hurt your feelings? Where did you go for secret nuptials?

Thanks in advance!
