@Vegmama: I agree that this article was positive. I meant that other articles that had been floating around previously like why French moms are superior or Spanish moms are better, articles like that. This blog seem to take a more positive tone I was trying to compliment it.

@Maysprout: Really? I thought many of them embraced the differences. It seemed like maybe their parents didn't understand, but for the most part, I thought it seemed positive.

I love this series from Cup of Jo! In a way, these cultural differences are my life because my husband grew up in another country and we both end up doing a lot of compromising because our cultural parenting styles are SO DIFFERENT in ways I didn't understand till we actually had LO.

@mrs.shinerbock: I think the sensationalism of the media is definitely why Americans (myself included) are so obsessed with safety. We watch 1 tragic story about some type of accident involving a child and we forget that it is literally a 1 in a million (or more) type of situation.

And this is why now parents are too afraid to let their older kids wait in the car for a few minutes while the parents runs inside a store, or why we don't let older elementary kids walk to school alone, or go to the park down the street alone, etc. etc.

@mrs.shinerbock: that could be it. I'd be more worried about a gone baby gone situation than a dog bite if I left my kid unattended in a stroller on the sidewalk. We also have a lot of people with untreated mental illness and we still have a love affair with guns.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: @Mrs. Sunshine: I always wonder if some of the over protection came from the fact that a lot of us were kids when crime rates peaked (late 80s/early 90s) and the messages coming from authorities/society/etc. was to protect your kids, teach them about stranger safety and whatnot. Combined with increasely sensational media exposure of the events that do occur, many people believe that we do live in a more dangerous time now, even though crime rates have fallen consistently since the mid-90s (when the fed government increased funding and resources for local law enforcement.)

Ha! Yeah this is pretty accurate. I feel like all the ways that America didnt parent were exactly how my parents generation of parenting was. My parents laugh when we implement all of these rules. Interesting how it seemed to really change in such a short period of time.

@Kimberlybee: That picture just blows my mind. I never even considered leaving my baby outside of our house to nap, much less outside a cafe - and we live out in the country, so it's not like anyone is going to come around!!

Now part of me wants to try it and see if he sleeps better :P

I love this whole series. It's so fascinating. I read a few books on parenting in other cultures and it just sort of made me realize that shit all comes out in the wash. You can get so wrapped up in doing things a certain way--and I totally agree that books add to the divisiveness of parenting!

@Vegmama: @Kimberlybee: oh no no no no. lol! The American in me worries about kidnappers and other baby snatchers. The Asian in me worries about the cold, draft/wind, and/or sun! So too many levels of worry for me.

@shopaholic: I saw this on a parenting website a while back. How refreshing and amazing it would be to not worry about baby snatchers and just let them sleep outside. So cool but hard to believe too.

That was a nice read. I feel like a lot of the mom articles comparing cultures just say american moms suck. This one seemed to focus more on differences than saying being an American is going to make your child suck at life. My husband's family is French so we go to visit and there's lots of children my kids age and there's definitely a lot of differences in parenting but I don't think one way's cut and dry a better way. I usually end up thinking my kids are better behaved even with major jet lag :silly:

Interesting. I wonder how this culture of choice and over protection came to exist in America since we all came from other places relatively recently.

@shopaholic: I know!!! I watch Call the Midwife, and they let babies sleep in their strollers back then. I want to be like, "Don't you know people snatch babies?!?!" ... I am would love to live in a place where baby could nap outside in the fresh air.

@Vegmama: very interesting read! It's seems like quite a few, if not the majority of women, have embraced American parenting??? I'm not from the US and my mom always remarks that I get too absorbed by parenting decisions (like agonizing over what should be LO's first food) when we have a much more relaxed approach back home.

I absolutely loved this post about parenting in the U.S. ... It was from moms who are from different countries, that are now raising their children in the U.S.: http://joannagoddard.blogspot.com/2014/10/24-surprising-things-about-parenting-in.html

I especially loved the part about how motherhood is a community. I, too, have met some amazing friends, because we happened to be "momming" in the same space, and sparked a conversation.
