@zippylef: Sorry, i didn't seem to get the notification for this post! Whoa, that's a lot of sleep! I notice that she goes to bed within 2 hours of being awake. Around this time, i thought they could stay up for about 3 hours? This is coming from someone whose LO had VERY short awake times. Have you tried extending her awake times at all?

Right now, my LO is 9.5 months and her awake times are 2.5 hours, 3 hours, 3 hours. Since she's going to bed at 7pm, how about gradually making it so that she doesn't sleep any later than 4-4:30pm?

Her schedule right now is:
7am wakeup
9:30am nap 1 (1.5 hours)
2pm nap 2 (1.5 hours)
6:30-7pm bedtime

I don't think she's ready for 1 nap yet. It could be that she's super tired from restless sleep the night before, and makes up for it during her morning nap...and then repeats the cycle. When we flew back home, she only had one 45 minute nap all day. Her night sleep was normal, but she was sooo tired the next day that she napped about 4 hours in total!!

@Sammyfab: @caffeinated: Okay.

Normal schedule:
8am- Wake-up
10:30am- morning nap.
11:30/12- wakeup
2:30/3pm- afternoon nap
4/4:30- wakeup (she sometimes sleeps until 5, but we cap it there and wake her up)
6:30/7pm- bedtime (we're working on a later bedtime)
Roughly 16-17 hours of total sleep

Lately:
Wakeup any time between 7am and about 8:45am.
9-10am-nap
wakeup is iffy. sometimes it's 11 and sometimes its 12:30.
2:30-3:30-nap
wakeup no later than 5
7pm- bedtime
Random crying spells and frequently a wakeup sometime around 4am where she wakes and plays/fusses/talks for around an hour overnight.
Roughly 10-14 hours of total sleep

I do realize that she sleeps A LOT. My husband is the kind of person that likes/needs a lot of sleep also. She sleeps as much as she wants because I feel like if she's wanting to sleep that much, she probably needs it.

We have always napped and fed on demand. She sort of set her own schedule as time went on and we went with it and it became her schedule. I can tell she's not sleeping restfully overnight because she wakes up and wants to take a nap very soon in the morning, sometimes not even 2 hours after she gets up. Then, she'll take a massive morning nap and fight taking one at all in the afternoon. We've tried doing one nap around 12ish but she gets overtired and fights like crazy, plus she's cranky all morning until I put her down.

Are you close to a Wonder Week? It sounds like how my LO acts when she is in a bad fussy period.

@zippylef: We are going through this, too. (Lo is 9.5 months). This week has been better, but the previous 2 weeks were horrible. She would take hours to fall asleep and would wake up every couple of hours crying. She was also not taking naps and working on teeth 5 & 6, too.

Both teeth have broken through the gums and she is sleeping better at night, but her naps are still not great. She's getting about 11-12 hours a day and I know she needs more. All I can say is keep with your routine and hopefully it will pass soon.

We're sort of dealing with the same thing right now. Our son is 9 months old and for the past three weeks for so, we've seen significant changes to his sleep schedule. He's been waking up around 3am and playing in his crib for 30-45 mins and then falling back asleep only to wake up again at around 5-5:30 which is so close to his normal wake up time that he can't fall back asleep unless I go in, nurse him and then put him back in his crib. Also, his second nap of the day (which used to be 1.5 hours) is now 30 mins and then we have to go back in his room and rock him to sleep, so he'll go down for another 45 mins or so.

We just sort of worked with it and tried with whatever methods possible to get him to sleep, but at the same time we didn't intervene too much because we didn't want to foster bad sleep habits and have to go back to sleep training again. For example, for the 3am wake up, we don't go in and if he starts to fuss, we just let him fuss a bit until he falls asleep.

It's starting to slowly get better and his 3am wake up is now lasting only about 15 mins and he's been sleeping better for his second nap, but he's still waking up at 5-5:30 to nurse and go back to sleep. But, I figure I can deal with that.

I know his little brain is processing a lot of stuff right now with learning how to crawl and sitting/standing on his own, so I'm cutting him some slack. There is light at the end of the tunnel!

Could the naps be on the long side? I think the WT sleep chart says that at 9 months, naps are no longer than 2.5-3 hours long and that they only need about 14-14.5 hours of sleep. Mine needs more sleep than most babies, but i cap her naps at 2.5-3 hours. Could you post her schedule?

Poor you! I also woke up at midnight, then at 4:30am. I hope it passes soon. I just got my wonder week 46 email, so it seems like there is something going around just before that age.

9 months is a really tough time because they're developing so much and gaining so many new cognitive and physical skills. I also think their sleep needs change a bit at this time.

It's hard to know what to do (stretch wake times or decrease them?) because you say she seems really cranky and tired. Can you provide more detail about what her schedule looks like, how long she sleeps and how long she fights sleep?

I have nothing but sympathy to offer. My sleep regression hell started (also) with a vacation at 5 months. Mine never went back to the kind of sleep she'd done before, but at 16 months, she's much better.

So, C will be 10 months on Sunday. She's never gone through a sleep regression before, 4 and 6 breezed straight by us. She is a very good sleeper normally and she needs a lot of sleep to function. Her normal schedule includes night sleep from 6:30-8/8:30 and 2 naps, normally 1.5-2 hours long.

She's killing me with this crap. We traveled back to visit family at the beginning of December (6 hour time difference) when she was 8 months old and I think that jump-started all this. It's more than just jet-lag at this point. We've been back home for 3 weeks now and it shows no signs of letting up and has gotten WORSE since we got home.

She is refusing her 2nd nap. She will only take it after a lengthy period of fighting and it's not restful, she wakes up on and off crying for a minute or two during. Night sleep is the same. She fights going to sleep at night, something she has NEVER done. Last night was the worst yet. She refused to go to sleep for an hour and a half until I fed her again and then she was up briefly (crying) at midnight and again (not crying, just fussing) for a longer period at 3am. She's also waking up earlier some mornings. She is regularly waking at 3-4am and staying awake in her crib for an hour or more. On average she is getting 3-6 less hours of sleep per day than normal.

She's a hot mess from being tired. She's cranky, whiny, clingy, she's decided she hates the car seat and cries every time I put her in it. She's the opposite of my sweet, laid-back, independent girl right now and it's driving me batty. She has started and mastered crawling and pulling up and started cruising all in the last month and I know that has a lot to do with it.

I'm not sure what to do. Do I just keep to the normal routine as much as possible? Do I try to "sleep train" her? Do I try to readjust her sleep schedule? Please, sweet jesus, tell me this will end soon.

ETA: We are also, very likely, working on teeth #5 and #6 right now also.
