I personally don't like sushi but my OB had zero concerns had I wanted to eat it.

I've had a little salmon sushi while pregnant. It's fine as it's low in mercury. Basically, the chances of getting sicks from sushi are the same pregnant as not being pregnant and that sickness would basically be food poisoning so it would suck to throw up, etc. but that wouldn't affect the baby in a negative way.

My ob has the same attitude about off limits foods in general. He just wanted me to stay away from high mercury fish and watch caffeine intake. Otherwise he said everything in moderation is okay, as long as I'm not eating gas station sushi! :P

I think you're in NYC too, right? My doc told me sushi was one of the only things she wasn't ok with. Which surprised me, I thought in NYC they'd be more lax on the sushi.

That's what my ob told me. He actually wanted me eating a moderate amount of low Mercury fish as it's supposed to help prevent preterm labor. My first trimester I had it a few times a week, it was one of my main cravings.

I heard the same & ate sushi once. Ironically, I had cold cuts & soft cheese (that may or may not have been pasturized), several different times. I'd have felt more comfortable eating sushi regularly, but just didn't. :silly:

That's the advise I got from my OB as well - it was the same advise I got for deli meat as well (fine at reputable places). I ate sushi and deli meat; no guilt.

So I went to my first OB appointment today, and they told me that sushi was okay to eat so long as (a) you are going to a reputable place and (b) you aren't eating high-mercury fish. They are a high risk practice and generally conservative so this surprised me. Their reasoning is that sushi in the U.S. is flash frozen, which kills all the bacteria. Anyone else get this advice? I think this is a new position they are adopting because they didn't tell me this last pregnancy.
