I love sushi. And like others have said, I had it occasionally, from reputable places, and avoided the high-mercury fishes.

I have a few times. My GP lived overseas for a while and told me they all laugh at the restrictions put on pregnant women here. How has anyone in Japan survived with all of that sushi?!
The single riskiest thing you can do for you and your baby is get in a car. Yet, I don't hear of any doctors suggesting limiting driving.
I think extreme limitations are just a false sense of security. If (God-forbid) something bad were to happen, I'm not one to believe that the sushi roll I had at week 14 has anything to do with it. Just do what feels right to you!

My OB was pretty low stress about food rules, but for whatever reason, sushi was the one thing she repeatedly told me to avoid, so I did. I never craved it during pregnancy, though, so it wasn't too hard to do without.

For my first I did not; first time mom anxiety!

For my second I did, though not much. I only ate stuff from places I usually get raw fish from though.

During first tri the thought of eating raw fish sounds awful. I might later if I was craving it and it was a place that I knew was high quality. I have a shellfish allergy though anyways, so I'm mostly left with vegetarian sushi once tuna is out.

I only ate cooked sushi for my first 2 pregnancies. I didn't worry about any of the rules for my last 2 pregnancies and I ate tons of sushi when pregnant with DS (although only from places I trust). Ironically I don't love sushi nearly as much now (post-partum) as I did before or during pregnancy though.

I did with my last but won't with this one.

Right before I found out I was pregnant I had raw fish and the next week it was announced that the usually trustworthy source of the fish had tested positive for hep A. Scared me out of it!

My second pregnancy I ate sushi fairly frequently from a reputable place. I craved it and it was delicious. I had actually read an article that the benefits of eating sushi/fish in pregnancy outweighed the "risk"

According to Motherisk (a hospital based organization that researches and publishes on pregnancy and breastfeeding related safety questions) raw fish is ok. I totally ate sushi from good, reputable restaurants. Quoted from their article

"Pregnant women need not avoid raw fish if it is obtained from a reputable establishment, stored properly, and consumed soon after purchase. Women should imit their consumption of high mercury fish and shellfish, including fresh tuna and yellowtail,25 although low mercury alternatives (eg, salmon, crab, and shrimp) can be consumed more regularly."

I don't eat meat or fish so my sushi is vegetarian but yes I've been eating it! I also got ice cream from the ice cream truck recently, drink coffee every day and will likely enjoy a beer or two this summer  Pregnancy "rules" can feel stifling and my midwives basically told me to live my life and not drive myself crazy about this stuff.

@ScarletBegonia: I don't think this is true. The warning for sushi has to do primarily with uncooked fish and secondly with fish with high levels of pcbs/mercury.

I have eaten a lot of vegetarian sushi (or cooked shrimp) sushi during all three of my pregnancies and haven't worried at all about it. In fact it's one of the few things I've really craved.

@ScarletBegonia: oh, the rice is the issue?! Wow. I thought I was safe as a non-fish-eating vegetarian. I ate it a bunch first time around and a few times this time. I make it at home too. Soft serve also is consumed. Yum!

I have been given a lecture by my dad about making pasta salads and eating those which involves the heating and cooling issue.

I think the issue with sushi isn't the cooked/uncooked fish or fillings, its the rice - cooked and cooled or reheated rice carries the risk of listeria.

To answer your question, I ate sushi occasionally through my pregnancy but tried to only have it at reputable places. It isn't my favourite thing anyway so was easy to avoid for me. Soft serve on the other hand.......

It's one of those things where it's on the no no list, but we don't always follow it. I think I stuck with only cooked stuff.
