@Kemma: Adorable! LO does the same thing with her hand so I could see her potentially liking that swaddle - it is different from the woombie with the wings. I wonder if I could get it in the US.

@Revel: my LO hated having her arms swaddled down so being able to have her hands up but still kinda swaddled worked really well for us, she also loved to chew on her hands.

Thanks all for the responses!

@grizz: @bisous: Ugh, I feel you! I keep hearing about 8 and 9 week olds sleeping through the night and over here it's all "Sleep? What's that?"

@charlotte: @Penny Lane: @wonderstruck: @mrsbookworm: @lamariniere: This is what I've been wondering about with regards to trying stopping the swaddle. It sounds like for a few of you it worked after a few nights.

@Baby Boy Mom: Not crazy, I tried this too! She didn't seem to like the bunchy fabric elsewhere, but it might be worth revisiting. In my short time as a parent the one thing I've learned is to just keep trying different things until something sticks.

@Kemma: That's cute! It reminds me of a woombie a little bit? That's one we haven't tried. I wasn't sure if being able to move her arms without being able to get to them would be a good or bad thing, and haven't pulled the trigger on buying yet another swaddle blanket.

@Sweet T: Thanks for the links! I don't think I've tried these, I'll give it a go if I stick with the swaddle.

UPDATE: So last night, after her first wakeup, I opted to give arms out a try. I figure her sleep is kind of bad so why not? She fell asleep in my arms easily after nursing (something she does not do when swaddled) but seemed to have trouble falling into deep sleep because her arms were flailing all over her face. I put her down and she slept for about an hour (this is shorter than normal for her second stretch). After this I swaddled one arm in and nursed for a short time, and put her down and she did two hours (this is pretty normal). I heard her stirring after a while but heard her sucking on her fist after that so there may have been some self soothing going on.

I think I'm going to try one arm out for the whole night tonight and see what happens.

I'd love any more thoughts and I will continue to update!

We used A+A blankets to do the russian swaddle (first video) when DS was an infant. It's more secure than a traditional swaddle and the bottom part is square instead of being tapered, much like a sleepsack. I also used a receiving blanket folded into quarters lengthwise to secure his arms (similar to the miracle blanket. second video). He was swaddled until he was 4.5 months old.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=MM7kmgXqKpg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=uQvKEaUC2Rw

ETA: I've seen a lot of videos where people wrap the arms similarly but the blanket also wraps over the tops of the shoulders. Our blanket was always below the shoulders and only wrapped around the upper arm.

My son was a terrible sleeper for pretty much the first year of his life. We gave up swaddling entirely by 8 weeks and it didn't make much difference either way. So no real advice other than to maybe stop and see what happens?

My LO hated the swaddle as well, so we gave up. He sometimes still startles himself awake, but it's worth it not to have to deal with the crying when we swaddle him...

We stopped swaddling pretty early for the same reason, he uses his hand to self-soothe and I didn't want to stop him from doing that, If you feel like he still needs the swaddle or it would help, you can always do a swaddle with one arm out.

I stopped swaddling at probably 6 weeks old because of this. he stopped startling himself after a couple nights of freedom. maybe that's something to try?

Ok so this might be random but my lo absolutely hates anything on or near his feet and starts kicking like a crazy person. So starting around 2 months I started doing the first layer of the double swaddle with an a+a blanket except instead of bringing it over his legs, I bring it up between his legs so there is nothing at his feet. It's kind of crazy but has been working really well for us and I'm still doing it at 5.5 months.

We stopped swaddling arms fairly early (pre 9 wks for sure) and he quickly stopped startling. I'd give it a try for a few nights. We did just a tightly swaddled lower body for a while, then halo sleep sack swaddles, then finally a+a sleep sacks. He's 4 months and goes 11 hrs now just in a onesie and his "vest" as we call it.

He always fought swaddled arms and only would relax when he was free. He likes sleeping with his arms over his head. Could've just been a coincidence but his sleep got way better when we left them out. . Maybe yours is the same !

Following - my LO is the same age and we're going through the same thing. I'm exhausted, and I'm sure you are too! He busts out of both a+as and swaddle mes.

Looking for some swaddle insight on my 9 weeks old's sleep. Since the beginning, she has fought the swaddle. Whenever she wakes in the night, she fights and fights to get her arms out, sometimes successfully. We've used A+A blankes (regular swaddle and the other swaddle methods on youtube), the double swaddle, miracle blankets, swaddle me's, and now are using halo swaddle sleep sacks. She seems to hate these the least because she can move her feet freely.

Also, at night at least, she falls asleep relatively easily when not swaddled, but takes longer to fall asleep and fights the swaddle when she is in it. We have continued with the swaddle because she flails her arms and startles without it, waking herself up about 30-40 minutes into sleep, and doesn't seem to be able to go a longer stretch. Also, she often wakes up when put down in the PnP if she is not swaddled. That said, her sleep is kind of poor anyway. we usually get one 3-4 hour stretch and night and then all shorter stretches after that, and cat naps during the day.

She's recently found her fists and chews on those a lot. I'm wondering if this is the beginning of self soothing and would be worth going off the swaddle.

Sorry for the novel, I've been meaning to ask this question for a while.

Anyone have an LO with similar swaddle behavior? Any tips or ideas? I can't wait to get her off of it because dealing with it is so aggravating. If we stopped swaddling, would she stop startling after a few nights?
