Hi all! I'm happy to report that naptime swaddle weaning has been successful so far. Four days in and now, as soon as we put her down she rolls over to her belly then OUT.

Just as I was about to hit 'submit' on this post, LO decided tonight she wanted out of the miracle blanket for bedtime too. I nursed her as usual after bath time pjs and swaddle but after lots of fussing and me picking her up to nurse her again three times, it seems she wanted the freedom. So I unswaddled her, placed her in the Zipadee-Zip, nursed her then set her down. She rolled to her side and fell right to sleep. Wow.......

@andrea - We tried one arm out at a time but she has eczema on her cheeks and was scratching constantly with her hands. The covered hands design of the Zipadee-Zip makes it less scratchy but she's still rubbing a lot.

@sammyfab - I was deathly and still am deathly afraid. So far her naps have only lasted <30 minutes with a lot of waking up to whine. She usually naps for 1.5-2 hours in the swaddle during the day. =|

@lydg - LO needs something to cover her hands for now until she learns to stop scratching her face. I've already changed my diet and also put Aquaphor on her to help with the eczema but it still bothers her too much.

@skibobrown - With the way naps are going I am really afraid to do bedtime without swaddle. Right now in the swaddle she sleeps from 730-7 with a feeding at 530. =P

@cvbee - I'm thinking for the next one I will only swaddle at bedtime and not naps so there isn't the strong dependency on swaddle for sleeping. She doesn't seem like she wants to lose the swaddle yet but DH is insistent. He never liked the swaddle...

@grace - hahaha just like that!!!!!

those sound great!

I think my LO will be fine because we let him nap with no swaddle.

Oooh! Good luck! I'm interested in following how this goes b/c we'll probably try weaning from the swaddle in the next month or two. We don't usually swaddle DD for naps b/c I've found that the swaddle doesn't actually help to extend her naps. (She only naps in 30-minute spurts no matter what, but when she's swaddled she wakes up angry b/c she can't get to her hands.) I'm still scared to try to drop the swaddle at night b/c she's such a good night sleeper right now, and I don't want to do anything to mess with that.

Maybe try a sleep sack? I have a friend with an 18 month old who swaddled and swears by a sleep sack since swaddling ended.

I am so scared of the day we have to wean the swaddle! I bought a Magic Sleepsuit for LO and have tried 2 naps in it but he woke up after 30 minutes both times!

I would personally start with the first nap of the day since it's usually the easiest nap. If your LO tends to go down really easily for bedtime and nap time went ok then i'd try bedtime too!

Interesting, that could be a good transition! We weaned by removing one arm at a time from the swaddle. DD was about 4 months old and she did fine.

It's time to say goodbye to our beloved Miracle Blanket. LO is 19 weeks and has been almost rolling over and DH is insistent we wean her before she gets stuck belly-side and can't move. She's also broken out of the MB twice so it definitely was time! I know she wouldn't be able to handle cold turkey cause her eczema makes her want to rub her face a lot, but she also needed to freedom to suck her thumb/fist cause it calms her. Here is where I did a ton of googling and found the Zipadee-Zip! These wearable blankets are handmade by a mom in Texas. She created them when nothing else was able to help her daughter wean from the miracle blanket. This blanket has a starfish shaped design to allow freedom of the hands but restricts arms from wacking babies head. I bought one in the 'meow mix' design and LO looks so cute in it!

I had planned on starting the weaning for naps first and will transition it to bedtime depending on how she does. Is this a good idea or should I switch completely? What did you do?
