We swaddle weaned DS at about 4 months. He's super big and strong and started breaking out of every swaddle we tried at about 3 months old. It also got super hot, so it seemed like a good time to get rid of the swaddle altogether.

We tried swaddle weaning once a week between 3-4 months. Every time, he would get hysterically upset and have a meltdown. :( But he was waking up a lot at night because he kept breaking out of his swaddle, so I knew it was time.

The first night, I put him in a sleep sack that was half unzipped so he wouldn't get too hot. He cried hysterically for about an hour while I rocked him to sleep, but I was committed, so I just powered through. That night, he woke up every two hours. The next night, he only cried for about 1/2 hour while I rocked him to sleep, and he woke up three time. By the third night, I only spent about 10 minutes rocking him to sleep, and he woke up once, for his regular feeding time. Woo-hoo! It was such a relief! We also transferred him to his crib (previously, we had been co-sleeping) at this time because he moves around a ton now that is he not swaddled. The last week or so, he's been rolling all over his crib at night and sometimes sleeping on his belly, so I think it was the right time to get rid of his swaddle.

We unswaddled at 4 months but we transitioned with the magic sleepsuit because I was soooo scared to quit cold turkey. The sleepsuit muffles the Moro reflex and I had watched my lo wake himself up several times with his flailing arms. The transition was seamless though and I am so happy we did it. He sucks on his fingers but I've never seen him fall asleep with his fingers in his mouth.

@caffeinated: We knew she was ready to be out of her swaddle when she constantly broke her arms out, and then proceeded to pass out. So we started to swaddle her with one arm out, which led to both arms out, and then no swaddle at all.

@caffeinated: he used to. He used to think it was play time if he wasn't swaddled. but for the first time ever tonight he used his hands to self-soothe instead of play.

@Coco Bee @Rubies: Did you guys ever have issues with your LO playing with his/her hands and waking up? I only have one arm swaddled (she self soothes with one hand) because the other hand wakes her up. I think she is ready at 4 months but i am afraid that other damn hand (that is currently swaddled) will interfere! Coco bee i hope he keeps it up too!

LO started breaking out of her swaddle (to get her thumb/fingers in her mouth) at 3.5 months, which is also when we started sleep-training. We put her in a sleep sack. Transition was smooth!

I'm doing it tonight for the first time! We've tried before with no luck. But tonight I did it, and his hands went straight to his mouth, he self-soothed himself to seep. so incredibly different than my baby who needed it before!!

Hopefully he keeps it up.

I remember seeing some posts on deciding to leave the LO unswaddled when putting him/her to sleep...

How did it go? How did you decide he/she was ready?
