Around 3.5 months, we switched to the Merlin Sleep suit, was an easy transition!

@Alivoo01: Anytime. I think it's important to be informed of your kid's cues/milestones and make decisions from there, rather than apply blanket statements. For once, I was glad my son wasn't a rolling fool at 2 months of age...no one would have gotten any sleep at all!

@looch: You give me some hope that it's okay that he's still swaddled. I'll be sure to ask the pedi at his 4 month appt to check for hip dysplasia!

My son loved being swaddled, he used to put his arms down when we'd get the swaddle out...my mom thought I was making it up until she saw for herself when he was 5 weeks old.

My son had a very strong moro reflex until he was about 5 months of age, so we kept him swaddled until he clearly showed us that he didn't like it any more. He was also checked for hip dysplaysia regularly, so I wasn't concerned about any increased risk there.

Around 4/5 months? She was in the RnP and couldn't roll over, so it wasn't an issue. Then we went to the Merlin Magic Sleepsuit before month 5 when we moved her to the crib. Then we moved her to the Halo Sleep sack before month 6

@starberry: @ZombieBullfrogHoller: DS is 15 weeks and still sleeps swaddled. If I let him sleep freely, his arms and legs flail like crazy and he'll never sleep! Not looking forward to swaddle weaning because I'm sure it'll be lots of crying/no sleep unless I let him co-sleep with me so that I can comfort nurse him to sleep each time he wakes up. No bueno!

We did it cold turkey around four and a half months. Dd was just ready, breaking out of the swaddle and had better control over her hands.

We moved c to the baby Merlin magic sleepsuit at 11 weeks, because she was waking herself up fighting the swaddle. Her sleep was so horrible that we had nothing to lose! She still hasn't rolled at 13 weeks

We did it at 9 weeks bc she started rolling back to tummy. We still either swaddled her legs, or put her in a sleep sack. It was rough for about a week but then she went back to sleeping normally.

We swaddle weaned around 12 weeks when LO found his fingers and was able to soothe himself to sleep. We started using the halo swaddle sleep sacks (instead of the Aden and anais blankets we had been using) and would swaddle him with one arm out. Once he was used to that we did both arms out but still used the velcro part around his chest. Over time we loosened the velcro and now he just uses a regular sleep sack. It was a much easier transition than I thought it would be!

@ZombieBullfrogHoller: this is what was in the news letter we received at work

UPDATED SWADDLING GUIDELINES:
*NO SWADDLING PAST 2 MONTHS OF AGE
*Infant positioned on back
*Hips loose to prevent hip dysplasia (let legs naturally assume 'froggy' position
*Ideally, hands free, and close to mouth to allow infants to self soothe
*Avoid tight 'baby burritto' wrapping
*Avoid heavy blankets/overheating; keep blankets away from face to avoid suffocation
*Avoid after 2 months; baby may flip over and find difficulty lifting head to breathe
(Recommendations per American Academy of Pediatrics, 2013)

2 months? Really? :( D is 11 weeks and can't sleep at night unless he's swaddled or laying on someone's chest. I've also noticed he can sleep on his back, unswaddled, if he's on the bed or a pillow, something soft vs. the firm mattress. We've tried putting him in sleep sacks, which he loves, but everytime we lay him down he wakes right back up. I'll hang around for pointers, because I think I'm going to need them!

@sarbear: exactly the same.

It was miserable for a few days, but then he accepted his fate. Also, we've used sleep sacks since we swaddle weaned.

The AAP just changed their recommendations in August to wean from swaddling by 2 months. Due to babies ability to roll over and not be able to roll back or lift their heads without the help of their arms.

My son hated being swaddled. boo!

Swaddle weaning- When did you do it and how did you do it? Thinking of trying it only for night time sleep in the beginning.

Thanks!!
