I feel like swaddling is one of those things that goes in and out of "fashion." My mom was very surprised that swaddling was "back in" when I had LO.

I actually just recently saw something from our local hospital on this as well. We are past the swaddling age so I didn't really look any deeper. Our second wasn't swaddled much and I know the hospital had switched to using the halo sleep sack/swaddle rather than receiving blankets prior to her birth in November 2014.

A couple of weeks ago my husband sent me a link to the new guidelines that say swaddling may cause SIDS. I probably should have posted here to share. There's so many ways to swaddle- blankets, premade swaddles and the research wasn't clear as to whether its all bad or certain products. The link we read also didn't say if swaddling- the act of confining the baby's movement- was the real issue.

Here's the link http://www.medicaldaily.com/infant-sleep-safety-still-misunderstood-many-caregivers-353322

The absolutely least crunchy, most by-the-book nurse at the center where I delivered insisted on a loose swaddle and one arm out, citing the issues mentioned above by @anagram. She said those were the new rules, and she always follows the rules. Every other nurse -- the more laid back ones -- swaddled as tight and often as possible!

@Mrs. Pickle: This is what our parenting class, too.

The hospital always swaddled DD while she was there so I thought it was okay. Then her first night she broke out of her swaddle (first time) and the blanket was up over her face. No more unsupervised swaddling after that!!

Right before I had A there was an article published (as in newspaper article) that swaddling is bad.

I ignored it. It's to the point where we can only leave a baby naked in the middle of the room to sleep or we are breaking so many "rules". 😑

ETA: Here's the link. The study was done by the registered nurses Association of Ontario. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/health-and-fitness/health/new-guidelines-highlight-risks-of-swaddling-babies/article17170433/?service=mobile

I haven't heard this! We were only able to swaddle for a few weeks because LO turned out to be an escape artist, but everyone recommended it. Of course now my anxious paranoid mind will latch onto the SIDS thing and not let go... I remember baby being a good sleeper but I'd poke him awake because I didn't want him sleeping too deeply... Smh

One book I read says not to because the author had someone swaddle her and it freaked her out so now she thinks it only calms babies because they're too freaked out to complain. Cause swaddling an adult with full control of their limbs is totally the same as doing it to an infant who has no clue what those things that keep hitting her in the face are.

I think basically the idea is that SIDS comes from babies sleeping too deeply. and that it's a tool babies have to wake up to remind themselves to breathe? Sort of. Anyways, I swaddled the heck out of my baby. For a really long time. He used to sleep well and now he doesn't! I will say I tried not to swaddle my baby during the day to encourage physical development and his sense of touch.

Other than the hip thing, and some RIE people, I haven't heard it's bad. Basically what you said, nothing scientific, just crunchy folks. I'm a big fan of both RIE and attachment parenting, and I swaddle at night. I don't during the day, but mostly because I'm hoping it helps keep her from getting her days and nights flipped (so far, so good).

DS had hip dysplasia when he was born but we swaddled his arms/chest area only and made sure the bottom was loose enough for his legs to splay out (plus the harness makes it impossible to tightly swaddle anyway).
Swaddling in general I hear more advocating than anything else.
I mean, hospitals provide swaddling sacks (at least ours did) for your newborn so....?

@Anagram: Yeah that's what they told me! But i don't see it anywhere...no research, not on the AAP....but yeah, that's the data i see on SIDs, too

We still swaddle T and I continue to do so. He's also in a crib at this point and I don't really nurse to sleep like they suggested...there were a lot of things told to me by this office that don't work for our life.

@blackbird: yeah I go to a new moms group for LO 2 and the nurse and LC who run the group have told all the new moms that the new recommendations are not to swaddle because "it hinders physical development, causes babies to sleep too deeply which hurts milk supply and can make SIDS risk higher, and can cause hip issues if swaddled too tightly".

However, I personally would do whatever the hell made my baby sleep better, as long as it wasn't like...putting a pillow directly on her face.

With my first, I was SO paranoid about SIDS but recently I googled statistics and SIDS deaths are less than half a percent of every 1000 births and that's including all the babies with smoker/drinker/drug using parents.

Was anybody told not to swaddle their baby based on "new research?"

I took T to get his frenulum lasered yesterday (yes, for the second time) by a very....crunchy family medicine clinic...and they made a point to tell me that he would be swaddled for the procedure, which is the ONLY time they advocate swaddling. I said what?! And she said swaddling is shown to increase the risk for SIDs and cause low weight gain in breastfed babies.

So i took to Google and found nothing substantial to back up this 'research', since the AAP gives its thumbs up to swaddling. All I could find were some attachment parent-y sites that had negative things to say about swaddling and ignoring your baby, basically.

Was anybody told the same? I'm going to continue to swaddle, and I'm unconcerned with T waking to eat at 4.5 months (and I sure as hell am not going to wake him to feed him, either, at this age, lol)
