It's a dessert for my family because my stepmom bakes cinnamon in with the sweet potatoes and the topping is mostly brown sugar.

Mmm, I LOVE it, and think of it as a side dish... mainly because I still want dessert afterwards, HAHA! Bring on the pumpkin pie!

It is definitely a side dish in my opinion. I have never had it with toasted marshmallows on top though, might have to try that next year.

So not a dessert! lol! I am not a big fan, but my cousin makes a pretty decent sweet potato dish with pecans and stuff...I'll eat it if I can get the right ratio of topping to potato. ;-) Even though it's somewhat sweet, to me, it's still a side. I would be totally bummed to go to Thanksgiving dinner, get to dessert, and have the host/hostess bring that out for dessert.

@Wondermommy: definitely side dish! My mom makes it every year and my favorite part is the toasty marshmallows on the top. I've never had candied pecans on it but that sounds delicious!

I consider it a desserty side dish and always eat it last with my dinner. (I'm a peculiar eater...I totally plan what order to eat my food in and make sure the last bite is the best bite!)

We have a family recipe that is half yams and half green apples (layered with sugar and butter) then marshmallows on top. The green apple's tartness makes it a little less like dessert.

I see it as a sidedish, although I know some people who make Sweet Potato Pie instead of Pumpkin, and then it's dessert. :)

@LeeLee, I adored that Ruth's sweet potato side dish! There was a restaurant in my office building, thank goodness they were closed for lunch or I would have had it every day!

I consider it a dessert. Ruth's Chris Steakhouse has an amazing sweet potato casserole that they will pair with vanilla ice cream if you ask them. It's AMAZING!

I love my mom's sweet potato souffle (cinnamon, sugar and nut crumble topping). I'd say it's officially a side dish, but I choose to eat it as a side, a dessert, breakfast the next morning, etc :)

To me it's too savory to be a dessert. You can prepare it without the marshmellows and candied pecans. We always serve those on the side and have be a bit of a build your own type of thing.

Trying to plan my Thanksgiving menu for this year, and I personally see Sweet Potato Casserole as more of a dessert, but others may see it as more of a side dish.

I make it with marshmallows and candied pecans on top, which to me is more dessert-ish.

What do you think?
