@blackbird: the weekend before I had my baby I went for a pedicure and the massage they gave me really helped the swelling. So there you go, a perfect excuse to get pedicures :)

Great thanks for the info!

I think even though my OB told me not to worry too much about the sodium, I'll actively cut back where possible (it's the holidays and we're going out of town-so hard! At least January will be here soon) and relax a little more. It's been hours since I took my socks off and I STILL have marks on my ankles

Mine started at 24 weeks and got progressively worse for the rest of my pregnancy. I didn't have pre-e, I had not issues with my blood pressure. The doctor said I'm just one of those women who swells a lot during pregnancy. I did go in a get monitored a couple times, but there was never anything wrong.

Good luck!

@blackbird: When I was hospitalized it was just for monitoring and keeping an eye on my blood pressure. Mine went down with rest as well, and I never tested positive for pre-e (platelet and urine checked out fine) so I was told to take it easy and had a twice weekly non-stress test too. I was only out of work a week on bed rest before I had my c-section. I ended up having a c-section because my blood pressure spiked over 160 twice and I was AMA (38) so they were taking no chances.

I was extremely swollen by then. No salt, elevated feet, laying on left side as much as possible.

@blackbird: when I was first hospitalized (37 weeks), I was kept on a monitor and fluids, while I was there resting my blood pressure lowered, platelets evened out and I was sent home with a 24-hour urine test - fun stuff! and I was on very strict bedrest from that point on, only allowed bathroom breaks and dr.'s appointments, no DTD, limited stairs in the house. I had NST's and BPP ultrasounds twice a week until my due date.
I was told by my nurses that that kind of care is rare and usually they'll just do a c-section but the hospital/birth center I was at doesn't like to issue c-sections if they don't have to and my blood pressure did improve somewhat with rest.

I had swelling during that time period and even a bit earlier. It was just in my feet and ankles but it would be pretty bad on an active day at the end of the day. My BP and weight gain were fine and my doctors were never concerned. It actually decreased a lot by the time I entered the 3rd tri and now I don't really have any swelling at 31 weeks. I think it can have something to do with baby position, too.

@chrispygal & rachiecakes, oh man. I'll keep an eye on it. I was actually thinking that I would measure my ankle and wrist and keep an eye on the measurement. When were you hospitalized/what did they do for you? I told her I didn't feel right today...almost sick and nauseated. But i think it was more my bowels being goofy.

Dh was asking how long I'd be allowed to work and if I'd end up on bed rest. I said I didn't know and it depends how this pans out. Obviously if i keep gaining 7 pounds of water weight in a week, I'm going to be in trouble. I asked her about cutting out the salt and she said it wouldn't help and there's nothing I can do, just keep an eye on it.

Ugh.

I swelled horribly, probably starting around that time. At first it wasn't too bad, but around 33 weeks it started to get really bad with facial swelling and the whole nine yards. They tested me mutliple times for pre-e but I never turned. I did have elevated blood pressure though, and they labeled this as Gestational Hypertension. I was in and out of the hospital four times in two weeks for monitoring and they almost admitted me until it was time to deliver but they trusted me to go into the office every other day for a non-stress test. They ended up pulling me out on bedrest and taking LO at 37 weeks and one day.

I agree with just being a little extra cautious. We ended up discovering the high blood pressure because I just felt off, like I was coming down with something, I my vision seemed funny - almost fussy. I really thought I was just not feeling well but called the nurses anyway and they had me come in. I assumed everything was fine until they took my blood pressure and became panicked. They were extremely cautious with monitoring me and the baby, but I'd rather it be that way. Swelling doesn't equal issues always, but it can be a sign. So just be cautious and take it easy. The swelling was not fun at all!

@blackbird: for me, swelling was the only sign that something was going wrong, be careful. I started to swell around 27 weeks and slowly symptoms of pre-eclampsia started showing up - blood pressure skyrocketed, proteins in urine, low platelets. I never ever felt dizzy, light-headed, sick, or in pain on my upper right side. Other than the swelling I could press dimples into I never would have seen it coming. Because so many people think swelling is normal in pregnancy most of my co-workers and friends laughed with me and thought it was cute but at my next appointment I was hospitalized. Be careful & take good care of yourself. <3

eta - I could never tell that my blood pressure was high, I felt the same.

I have some of those socks at home...they dig into my toes quite a bit, though! (i had surgery on both my big toes a couple years ago; they're sensitive!) I guess i could cut the toes out. Classy :P I have also switched to wearing mostly tennis shoes with supports in them for work. Support and all.

All of my friends were like, "oh yeah, you swell up the last month or two". Maybe they were in denial at this point, lol.

I was swollen by then too, my legs, feet and ankles were a joke. Compression stockings really do help, I know they're expensive but they work like a dream.

I saw my OB today and she pointed out that I was already swelling and had a large weight gain in a week. Last week I was up 16 pounds, Monday I was up 20, and this morning I was up 24 lbs. When she pushed on my shin with her finger, it left an indent, like memory foam does. She wants me to keep an eye out for more swelling and said that if I don't feel good, she wants me in ASAP for a blood pressure check. Today, my blood pressure was great. She said that due to multiple m/c, I'm at higher risk for pre-eclampsia. Something about there possibly being underlying autoimmune issues and my body going into a rejection mode.

The bands on my socks and watch are leaving marks on my skin. Anybody else swelling up at 24-25 weeks? I was under the impression I'd start swelling in the last 2 months, but I've still got a ways to go! Now I'm concerned I won't make it til the end of March!
