Also, for keeping warm, it might look a bit silly, but what about a hat? Over half of body heat is lost through the head....

@Littlebit7: Ditto - I spent a large share of my childhood at the pool at military bases, and there was always adult swim the last ten minutes of every hour.

I grew up in a military family and moved a lot. All over the southeast, west coast. Lived both on and off base. I was in the pools basically as soon as they opened. I always remember having adult swim! Everywhere! I didn't realize that wasn't a thing!

My pool did that when I was a kid. It was no big deal for us- we would go grab a snack or read a book. I would just bring a couple big thick towels per kid so they can get wrapped up while they wait. Maybe also a thermos with a warm drink or have something warm for dinner.

@MrsSRS: I'm imagining being on holiday abroad, in the Mediterranean, relaxing around the hotel pool, and I'm sooooooo jealous that this is your"local pool" experience! Its our tradition to get a hot chocolate after swimming, not an ice lolly!

@Cherrybee: Ha! Yeah that would make no sense. Imagine an open pool full of noisy kids, and then for 10 minutes every hour they are out eating popsicles and getting hot while adults hop in to cool off and just float a bit and relax. Kind of like making all the kids sit on benches at the park while the grown ups swing and slide in peace for a bit.

@MrsSRS: I think I'm imagining something totally different when it comes to the pool. Outdoor pools are not really a thing here because the weather is so bad. I'm sure they exist but all my local pools are indoor, chlorinated ones; you wouldn't sit around the pool - there are no sun loungers or anything. If you were sat at the side of the pool (eg kids swim lessons), you'd be fully dressed. "Adult swim" means lane swimming (adult only being necessary because kids get in the way). You wouldnt "relax in the pool" at my local pool. I had visions of them putting the lane ropes out for 10 minutes every hour while all the kids shivered on the side and their parents got in 10 minutes of swimming!!

We had adult swim when I was a lifeguard. We used it primarily for the parents, there were often so many kids splashing around that they couldn't get in and just cool off without being touched!!

The adults loved it, they asked for it, lol!

@Cherrybee: our pools used the time to scan the water for hazards, switch lifeguard shifts, and I think it was good as a kid to have to take a little break. Swimming is tiring! As a mom, ten minutes of relaxing in the water while my children and all the others have to stay out sounds pretty good, actually.

Yep. We used the time to go to the bathroom and have a drink and snack and reapply sunscreen. But it was always at least 90 degrees, so wrapping up in our sun warmed towels was plenty on cooler days and in warmer days we would just bask in the sun.

What??? For 10 minutes?? What's the point in that? What good is 10 minutes of adult only swimming??

Our pool has a timetable with fixed hour long sessions - parent and tot, adult only, ladies only etc.

The swim club pool and local public reservoir both have rules that kids have to vacate the pool for 10-15 minutes each hour.

I don't recall hearing that rule growing up or before moving to Northern Califoria. Is that a new thing? Regional? Is that a rule at your local pool?

I don't mind the rule but it makes for very cold kids since we swim outdoors after work. Any tips on keeping the kids warm would be appreciated.
