@graceandjoy: That's hilarious! We still need to set it up! It's been raining so much here that we haven't had a free weekend to deal with it. Hopefully this weekend. And I think I'm more excited for it. :)

@Mommy Finger: My BIL bought the dome climber for my girls birthday last winter and we just set it up. It's HUGE and adults had more fun on it hah! My girls are a little small to be able to climb up, but they will be growing into it for sure! For now they like to climb inside and pretend to be camping!

@periwinklebee: Sooo I was team no need for a swingset, but there was a really great deal a while back and I ended up getting it! It just got delivered; DH, his dad and his bro will set it up soon. I have a 4.5 and 2.5 year old that have outgrown the toddler plastic set we have, and I agree with others this plus our dome climber, play house + water play stuff will keep the entertained if we don't have enough time to go to the playground.

@periwinklebee: One more idea, my friends dad built a large playhouse in their backyard. Once we out grew it he turned it into a storage shed! I remember playing out there for hours when we were in elementary school. In middle school we used to to hang out and gossip. Then I think it was high school he turned it into a shed.

@ChitownRo: Love it! This is a good point about dinner. Our kitchen is in the back of the house with tons of windows (but not open to the rest of the house), so when LO is old enough it would be great for him to entertain himself outside while I'm fixing dinner, and I could actually keep a better eye on him than if he is playing in the front of the house...

I love our play structure. We use is constantly in the nice weather - even though we have awesome parks In walking distance too (we go to those prob 5 times per week). The backyard space is good for before school or before dinner play, when we have shorter time chunks, not enough time for a real park outing

My best friends have used and loved their playset from kid 1-kid 3, age 2 through now 7. They play on it probably about 5x a week. They still go out a bunch and go to parks bc parks are better, but the playset is great for when you need 20-30 minutes to cook dinner or clean etc.

I agree that a play house and kid table would be a great idea, too.

@ALV91711: Yeah, it gives us plenty of time to find a good deal/figure out what to add. I'm sure even for the little toddler equipment a fall zone is still beneficial...

@Silva: This sounds awesome, I love the ideas! This is your custom built house, right? I *loved* the not so big house series you suggested... My son is obsessed with the playground at daycare, and I'm going to ask them more about it. They have a traditional toddler play structure, but also sandbox and an outdoor art studio, which I would love to set up a small version of at home. LO is also obsessed with anything that makes loud clanging sounds, outdoors seems like a great place to set something up around that (large lot, so unlikely to be loud enough to disturb the neighbors:-)

@wrkbrk: Thank you!

@Foodnerd81: I don't actually mind it either, it's kind of nice to have a built-in draw. It's only a problem when we have "competing" groups of friends - like if we have family friends over that we're trying to socialize with, and then the neighbour kids see us playing in the backyard and want to come over too.

@Silva: we have a hill that slopes down to the street. So for sledding it’s ok but a parent as to be at the bottom to catch them before they zoom into the plowed road. (Super quiet end of the cul de sac street so traffic isn’t so much of a concern but pavement is).

We have one that was here- it has a slide, swings, and a couple ways to climb up to a playhouse, with a sandbox underneath.
It gets a lot of use but the features that get the most use are the swings and the sandbox. I love having it but when we move in a few years my kids will be 4, 6 and 10 at that point we will do some big tree swings and some type of playhouse, plus more “adventure” stuff like slack line and zip line.
All of that is to say that you don’t have to do a classic play structure you can create a play space with the pieces that suit you- tree swing, sandbox, maybe a climbing dome? But with a 14 month old you have many many years of playing outside ahead and I’m all for thinking of ways to encourage independent backyard play!
The thing I wish our yard had is a hill! We live near a field and our neighbors let us sled there, but it would be nice to have a grassy hill for rolling down, driving cars down, setting up water slides, etc

@periwinklebee: I think it is a good idea to prep your fall zone and then you can look for what you want for a good deal for a couple years from now. For this summer you could get a smaller age appropriate climber/slide.

@PinkElephant: yeah, I'm sure the little toddler set is much more appropriate for now and less of a headache to watch him around (because he undoubtedly will love most whatever is least age appropriate :silly: ). I just don't want to seed grass and then turn around and rip it up next summer for a playset. So maybe I'll install a fall zone now while we're ripping out the slab and assume that we'll put in a swing set when age appropriate....

@periwinklebee: maybe you can start with a small, age appropriate plastic climber/swing set (think Little Tykes or Step 2). You can find these used dirt cheap or free, and they’re easier to move. If he likes that, you can move up to a nice cedar playset when he’s a little older and you’ve had time to decide what you want!

@ALV91711: @Purpledaisy: You guys are making me really want one :silly: He definitely will need close supervision for the foreseeable future regardless. I don't want to seed grass just to rip it out for a fall zone in a year because we decided when he's older that it's worth it... Starting small with something modular may be a good idea!

@Mrs. Champagne: @Autumnmama79: My grandpa made me a swing set with a fort at the top that I LOVED as a kid. I'm sure there were a zillion ways to injure myself by modern standards, but it was awesome! Some of the happiest memories of my childhood (then again, no neighborhood park, so that was the entirety of playing outside besides school recess...)

Even though your son is a bit young for it I’d do it. He’s too young to be out there alone anyway so you’d have to be outside with him. Then when he is a bit older and can go out himself he will have hours of entertainment.

Going to the park is good but you don’t always want to have to go to the park. Try and find something second hand if you can to save money. We just sold our climber/slide for cheap.

We were really on the fence about getting one because we were afraid that it wouldn’t be used very much. We decided to get one at the beginning of last summer and it was one of our best purchases ever. Our kids are 6 and almost 3 and they play out there for hours with minimal supervision needed. We don’t live within walking distance of a playground but even if we did I would still want a play set in the backyard. It’s nice that the kids can go out there by themselves and it’s really cut back on their screen time.
