@abbydabbydoodlebug: thats essentially the Ferber method where you go in to soothe at different times incrementally, 5-10-15 mins. I guess people added the "attended" part because true CIO is more like Weissbluth, extinction style.

@citymouse: yeah I think that makes sense. I guess we'll move her RnP to her room with the white noise first. Then go from there. I've not heard of attended CIO, how do you do that?

@abbydabbydoodlebug: Until about 6 weeks, we did whatever he wanted to get him to sleep. Around that mark though I realized that he was only sleeping in 45 min increments. So I started doing the EASY routine and putting him the swing in his own room in the swaddle with the white noise. We did that alone for about a week, not letting him cry at all. The next week, we did attended CIO, starting with 5 mins. Last week, week 8, we stopped the swinging motion. This week, we transferred him to the crib. So, with the EASY routine we would put him down drowsy and watch for his sleep cues. The only time we actively let him fall asleep while eating is if he cannot settle himself at bed time, like we have been trying to get him to sleep for more than 45 mins, then we will feed a little bit and let him drift off. Does that make sense?

@citymouse: DH and I are going to try moving our LO to the crib at night in the next couple weeks. How did you move your LO over if they didn't sleep in the crib from the beginning? Did you rock or nurse them to sleep before putting them down? Or do you do until drowsy and let them fall asleep on their own?

@heartonastring: I haven't heard of that! I will check it out. I know it's okay for him to stay in the swing longer, but we both are ready for him to be in the crib. We are going to tough it out and hope that it's worth it in the long run! He does well in the crib at night thankfully!

@troberts1021: Gosh! DS's morning nap is his worst! Crib or no crib!

@ShootingStar: Yeah, pretty much cold turkey. We do go in and soothe at different increments. If he isn't doing better after a week in the crib, we might reevaluate, but for now I think we are going to tough it out. Thankfully at night he does just fine!

@citymouse: Did you go cold turkey? Maybe just try for one nap a day. To get my LO used to the PnP I would start him out in there and when he woke up I'd soothe him and put him back down and if it didn't work after 2 tries, we'd just give up on that session and try again later. I wouldn't force the transition, just don't give up and he'll be able to spend longer and longer in the crib.

I just started this last week too, ugh. My LO sleeps in his crib at night, but naps in his swing during the day. I've started trying the morning nap in the crib and it's all of 20 minute, grrr. This transition is tough, hang in there!

@citymouse: Have you read the Troublesome Tots post on swing to crib transition? We followed it and I found it extremely helpful. At only 9 weeks I wouldn't worry about swing naps at all. Focus on getting into the crib at night (we idnt even do that until 5.5 months! Albeit, she slept in the PnP at night from birth to 3 months and then in the swing from 3 months to 5.5 months). Naps are way harder and the motion can continue to be necessary. Don't sweat it.

@citymouse: sorry it was so rough. :( Maybe you can try to make a nest for your LO. I think Mrs Blue did a blog post on it. If my LO doesn't do well in the crib by itself, I think I'm going to try that.

@kjpugs: pretty terrible. He probably slept a total of 2-3 hrs today. He is 9 weeks and needs at least 5 hrs of day time sleep. Hopefully he will sleep well tonight and we can try again tomorrow! I think he really just misses being more cocooned! I picked him up once and he instantly fell asleep!!

Good luck, I've been there!
We were in a swing until 5.5 months and any nap in the crib was only 30 minutes. Then we went on vacation and were forced to use a portable crib for 1 week. It was super rough but showed us that she was ready for the crib and we were emotionally ready for sleep training. Got back home and on the first night she cried only 20 minutes. 1 week later there are no more tears and sleeping through the night. Naps are also great.
You need to make sure your LO is ready for it and if not, be willing to back off and try again later. Otherwise it can just become a stressful, emotional event.

Good luck!

I'm hoping to transition LO to her crib from her RnP and swing at the end of this month. She'll be almost 3 months, so I'm hoping to avoid any bad habits forming... Should I start with night time first or just go ahead and do both night and naps? Or does it matter with her being so young?

@heartonastring: Same with us!

We had her in a rock n play until about 5 months and then moved her into the crib at night. It was a surprisingly easy transition, I think she was outgrowing the rock n play and was more comfortable in the crib at that point. But we still let her nap in the rock n play or swing for a while after that. 7 months now and she just started napping consistently in the crib a few weeks ago.
