What about a high chair that reclines, if you are looking for an upright, sitting positioned thing? I used mine for a lot more than just eating, like bringing it near me while I prepped lunch and my son looked on.

From the three pieces of gear you mentioned we only had a bouncer. Since all babies are different I am hoping to get more use out of it with #2 than we did with LO. We used a Bjorn. Bouncer.

@SweetiePie: This is a really good point about separate places for sleep and awake. Great thread, and definitely making me reconsider whether a bouncer is worth it.

@DesertDreams88: yes, I'm kind of the same with the places for awake/play and places to sleep. That's why I'm unsure of the swing, because I could see that they would fall asleep in it but I'm not sure that I want that to be an ongoing thing like for months and months and months. Obviously in the newborn days it would happen from time to time but I don't want that to become a crutch. With my first I kept awake places and sleep places very separate. Even today I don't like for his crib/bed to be a place where he plays and hangs out. I want him to associate it with sleep. His room is one thing but his bed is another.

We used a RnP for night sleep.
We used a bouncer for day naps (ONLY way he would nap... we'd have to physically bounce him and then ease off),
The swing was just for sometimes fun (it was a small portable one).

The swing was the least used, the bouncer and RnP were equal. I liked having variety, though, and separating "places for awake" and "places for sleep."

We had a swing, a bouncer, and a rock n play. We used all of them a lot!
The swing was great because I could put my awake baby in it and leave her and within 10 minutes she would be asleep.

The bouncer was better when she was awake but I couldn't hold her (like I was folding laundry, or washing bottles). We had a super cheap fisher price one and it was great. So easy to move from room to room.

The rock n play was where she slept overnight every night for months. I loved that it was so portable because we could transition her from our bedroom to her room with ease. We could also take it with us to any other place we might be staying over night.

We did let her sleep over night in the swing for a couple weeks (against recommendations) but I didn't want her to get too used to that so we stopped.

The swing was an absolute life saver with both of my kids. It was a guaranteed nap until they hit the 20lb weight limit and there were a few desperate nights where I slept on the couch next to a swinging baby. We used it until like 10 months with both kids. Neither cared much for the bouncer.

@SweetiePie: we used a bouncy seat the way you're describing for both kids. With DS we had a cheapo one which was fine, but I splurged for the bjorn one for DD -- I wanted the mesh fabric for my summer baby and I figured she would be spending more time in it so I wanted something more versatile. She's 7 weeks old and we are already big fans of it. We also have and like the mamaroo but I think I'd pick the bouncy seat if I could only have one.

I vote for bouncy seat. None of my girls liked the rnp. I had a swing for DD1, she liked it just okay; it was a hand me down tho and died before DD2 and we just never got another one. We did get a bouncy seat for DD2 so she could hang out with us when she was young... It was very useful! I got as super cheap Fisher Price one that had a toy bar and it was great!

@Anya: yeah I never knew that it reclined until I checked out their website yesterday! It goes almost flat for napping which is nice if they fall asleep while sitting in it. And then I did see that it can be used as a chair up until two years old. I just wondered if it actually gets used like that so it's nice to hear you say that.
I think I am leaning towards a bouncer of some type since we are in an apartment and I want something that I can move around easily and store when not in use. The swing seems like it could be really useful but it will take up a lot of space. Maybe I'll start with the bouncer since it's small and then if the kid doesn't like the bouncer I'll get a swing if needed.

@SweetiePie: Good to know about the jumperoo! I think the bjorn bouncer is marketed for newborns; I just read that in some of the reviews but haven't met anyone who's actually tried it. You could always give it a try and return if it doesn't work.

We've had a mamaroo, a swing, a baby Bjorn bouncer, and a taggies bouncer. We basically never used the swing. B never cared for the Mamaroo, W loved it and we used it all the time when he was little - we'd swaddle him, put him in the mamaroo, and he was asleep for two hours no problem. The bouncer was great for an arm break, and for when I needed a shower and they wouldn't go to sleep. I loved the look and portability of the Bjorn but didn't notice any preference from the boys so not sure it would be worth the cost (although I did resell it on kijiji for $80).

@periwinklebee: We had the jumperoo and exersaucer for my son and both were invaluable from about 5-10 months.
I am looking for something more for newborn to like 5 months I guess. So that's an interesting point about the bjorn bouncer. I just really want something more portable and more seated upright so I can shower and get lunch together and everything for my toddler and he's right there. But if it's not worthwhile till later then that's something to consider.

I got a swing for #2 but I felt like it was only used for 2months tops. It was in our living room and quickly we were too loud during his naps and he needed a quieter place to nap.

I think a Bjorn bouncer is better.

For us we liked both the swing and the bouncer because they had totally different purposes--the bouncer was for sitting up, awake, babbling, being entertained, and eating as he got older, while the swing basically put him right to sleep (which, obviously, I loved).

I don't have any useful perspective, but was wondering something similar. I saw the bjorn bouncer as well and was sort of intrigued. It seemed from some of the reviews of it though that babies don't really like it until they are a bit bigger and fit more comfortably, say 3 months or so. And then I was wondering if by 5 or 6 months a baby would be more entertained by something like the fisher price rainforest jumperoo, which seems like a similar (and cheaper) concept once they can hold up their heads but with a bunch of toys on it to play with. I can see though the advantage of the bjorn being more portable and blending into a small apartment better.

My ODD was a fussy, fussy baby and the ONLY place she would sleep consistently was the swing. It was a lifesaver. YDD is a much calmer baby and can sleep anywhere, but if I need to get something done, I know she will be content in the swing as well. I LOVE ours. It's a Fischer Price one that swings side to side or front and back. We've always only used it side to side.

We have a bouncy seat too, but never really use it.

Oh my goodness both were invaluable for both my kids. The bouncer until probably 6 months, and the swing until 12 months. We had fisher price for both. Might want to check Once Upon a Child or similar stores, I brought my used ones there which I would think would be much cheaper than new if you aren't sure they'll like it.

I got the bjorn bouncer for my second and loved it! He did not love it so much because he always wanted a real person to hold him. but i used it to get ready with him and when big sister was in the bath - I needed something light and narrow for small spaces. He would also be happy to sit in it if someone was entertaining him! We never had a swing or mamaroo or anything so can't compare.

The bjorn bouncer is the only baby holder that we own. And for LO2 we actually got a second one to have one on each floor. We took one on a beach trip with us at the end of my maternity leave and it was so portable! Also super easy to wash. And I like that it's not something mechanical because then we don't leave her in it for long periods of time because she would fuss.

Neither of my kids really cared much for the swing, but both liked our bouncy seat. I had a hand me down one that was honestly pretty ugly, but it vibrated and had a bar over it with a mirror facing the baby, and dangly toys for when they were a bit bigger and starting to swat at things. That wasa big help! I don't really think they would have liked the bjorn one nearly as much (though its way more attractive!)

We didn't have a swing or bouncer last time, just a RnP. That was a lifesaver but I kinda want to try one other baby-holder for the next one. I'm intrigued by a bouncer (Bjorn) because its so portable and I can move it to bathroom, kitchen, etc. I'm curious about a swing because I just hear so many good things about them. We actually did have a Mamaroo last time but he didn't like it and I packed it up pretty early. So I'm really curious how a swing is much different, if at all.

I know every baby is different, of course. Just curious about experiences.
