I can't tell you what is best for you, but I can reassure you. I am an NICU nurse, which means rotating shifts, weekends, overnights etc. now, I have always done shift work, so I am used to it, but I love my shifts (my hubby not so much but that's a different story  ). It has a lot of benefits, like my hubby is much more independent with our kids because when I am working he has more alone tine when he is in charge and has to do things without me. I also get more "me time" because we use day care during my night shifts, so after I get my sleep I have time for cooking, cleaning, errands etc and my DH does daycare pickup.

@Becksabee: It sounds like the work environment you have is unstable/starting to not be as great and the long plan is to get a job at a hospital. If the opportunity is there, I would explore it. If you already have childcare during the day, then you can sleep, etc. overnights aren't the best but I guess I'm thinking I'd rather get the crappy hours out of the way sooner in hopes of getting a good schedule once the kids were in school. Rather than starting over with a not ideal schedule when they are much more scheduled?

I haven't decided for sure. My husband thinks I should stick with the job longer and establish more work history. I've been there almost 3 years.

Childcare is not an issue. My husband works 9-5 and is the one who picks up/drops off the kids.

Money-wise we do ok. The bills get paid, but I have a lot in student loans which I have been stressed over. More money would be great. My work does do yearly raises so I would make more money as time goes on but there is no chance of advancement.

Working nights pretty much sucks. Have you already decided you definitely want to do that? If you are totally fine with it, then yes I would make the switch. Personally I had to work nights a new nurse and would never do it again, esp now having a young kid.

Also how will you handle childcare if/when you do rotating shifts?

I'm currently staying at a job with great flexible hours and 80% WAH. I know I could easily get a 10-15% raise just by switching companies, but the flexibility is invaluable during this season of life for me.

I switched a job I really liked (worked w/ my husband, flexible hours, good benefits, etc) to a job with better money, and I hated the new job so much! Tgere was no work/life balance... and they worked me even hardwr after I had my 2nd baby, so I hardly saw my family (or new baby for that matter). But, we were able to move to a nicer area, pay for better daycare and go on nicer vacations After 2 years I was finally able to get another job.

So, I guess I'm saying it's a toss up. It's such a hard decision that you will only know if you try. It could end up being a great opportunity or a struggle. Good luck!!

@mrscobee: @Corduroy: I agree. Regular hours make my life SO much easier with a small child (soon to be adding a 2nd). That would really be my priority unless your job is unbearable. But it would be a nightmare for me to arrange backup childcare for weird shifts overnight etc.

@Becksabee: Will the difference in pay make a difference in your lifestyle? Will it balance out the change in schedule?

At this point I value my predictable 40 hour work week and flexible schedule over 'more' money. If we weren't making 'enough' it would change my thinking.

For me, it would also depend on the culture.... long or weird hours are bearable with great coworkers/bosses, but I can barely stand a normal day when I'm being disrespected and belittled by administrators.

Would you leave a job with great hours for a job with better pay?

I work in a specific area of healthcare and my goal has always been to eventually get a job at a hospital. I was planning on staying at my current job longer but we've had a change in management and things are going downhill fast. I have great hours (Monday -Friday 8-4). If I switch to hospital, the pay will be better but I may have to do overnights for a period of time or do rotating shifts. My kids are young (3 years and 8 months) so I'm unsure if I should jump ship now or wait.
