We switched ours to Nutramigen at 8.5 weeks and he is doing so much better...sleeping more at night, smiling at us, etc. We did it cold turkey and it was fine...he loves his food though in general and is a big eater.

@Mae: ah good to know! We do room temp formula anyway, so hopefully he’ll keep taking it that way!

Glad this worked out for you to just switch right away! I'm on my second baby with MSPI, who I have supplemented with Nutramigen-- which is basically another brand of alimentum. Both I was able to switch over to nutramigen cold turkey with no real issue. I will say, my first daughter got fussier about taking it as she got older and we had to start warming it, but I'd hold out doing room temp or cold as long as possible because warming it is a PITA :)

@pwnstar: oh I 100% agree with the smell! I just wanted to get him to take it ASAP because he was such a mess and in pain on the soy that we tried second. We are still trying to figure out exactly what’s going on. It started as thinking it was reflux, but then he did worse once starting Zantac. So my ped suggested trying new formulas if that was the root of the problem. So it could be mspi, but I’m not 100% sure. All I know is he was super fussy before starting the meds, then got worse after starting, then was absolutely miserable with the first switch to soy all while staying on Zantac still. So I’m hoping this alimentum helps - he seems better today, but the real test will be tonight!

@Mamag511: We used RTF and switched cold turkey. Like @arosebyany:, I wanted to get my LO free and clear of milk proteins (which takes approx 2 weeks) as quickly as possible.

Fwiw, I don't think any formula really smells all that great, but I could not have cared less about the smell because my LO improved so dramatically within the first couple of days.
Also, if you/your Ped thinks this is MSPI, Alimentum/ Nutramigen or Neocate are, pretty much, the only MSPI-safe options.

@2littlepumpkins: @Mamag511: agree on the gerber! we did gerber soothe for supplementation purposes (not MSPI but reflux) and it did the trick. From what I understand, it's a lower-lactose formula and can be helpful if you're not dealing with the big gun intolerances/allergies. I found the articles on "incredible infant" (now "mighty moms club") about formula and reflux/intolerances to be super helpful and that's how I discovered gerber soothe.

We didn't end up doing alimentum but got close with lo1. She was very fussy on regular formula and similac sensitive. We decided to switch all at once to gerber good start and that worked well because of it being broken down. Just thought I'd throw that out there bc it's a lot cheaper. Sorry you're having to deal with this!

I didn’t mix with anything, just went cold turkey. He didn’t even flinch.
He was younger though, about 5 weeks I think.
That stuff STINKS. Haha. But it worked well for us.

I don't remember exactly how long, but we were also warned about the taste. In the end, Alimentum didn't work for us. We were then prescribed Neocate and omg it was sooooooooo much nicer! No odd smell and it worked wonders for us. Truly night and day. Good luck to you, I know it's tough :goodluck:

You may want to just give him a bottle of the Alimentum cold turkey and see if he will take it, he may since he's still pretty young. I agree I would use the ready to feed.

We had severe mspi (well, it was more than just milk + soy), I was BFing but our GI wanted me to give him Alimentum while I began my elimination diet. Unfortunately he reacted to Alimentum as well (although I believe it's well tolerated by MOST MSPI babies). He did drink down the Alimentum bottle we gave him although he was a bit younger (maybe 4 weeks). We did try Neocate but that stuff is foul and when we tried it he was about 5 months or so and he wouldn't drink it. Good luck!!!

@arosebyany: Thanks - I’ve been reading similar stories about the rtf. I’m hoping to switch quick - the soy was such a disaster that I feel so terrible for him and am hoping this works better!

I never mixed it and just started with the full bottle of allimentum. He was in so much pain I wanted to get him off milk proteins as quick as possible. I honestly can't even remember if our ped suggested mixing it. With that being said DS was only 4 weeks old and we used the RTF instead of the powder.
Forgot to add, it did seem like the powder mixture was a little more liquidy than the RTF. We also went with the RTF because I read over and over that people's babies still had problems on the powder because the powdered version had corn in it, and I did not want to have to chance switching again. It was our 5th switch at that point. Just some food for thought

I am in the process of switching my 11 week old to alimentum. We started with similac sensitive and then went to soy, but his fussiness, gas pains, and reflux have gotten worse...so this is our next try.
My pediatrician told us to transition him to the alimentum by mixing it with other formulas bc the taste is so bad. If you made the switch and did a similar transition, how long did you drag it out for? Like did you switch totally in a day (like one or two bottles half and half and then a few with a 3:1 ratio?) or did you switch over a week? My ped didn’t really give a timeline, but she did say we could do it cold turkey too, so I’m guessing it could be quick!
