Well, that did NOT go well. We took down crib on Saturday morning, and she really liked having her mattress on the floor- to sit and read on, pretend to sleep on, etc. She fell asleep in the car and we put her to sleep on the mattress and she slept fine. Bedtime came around, and she went to sleep okay- I had to rub her back and sing a bit more than usual. But she rolled out of the bed after a couple of hours- we went and put her back in. A short while later she was up for good- I think maybe it was just too confusing for her? Or maybe the crib mattress is too small? Or maybe she's just a bad sleeper no matter what??

DH put the crib back together at 10:30, she went back down around 11, and was up her usual 2-3 times that night, up for the day at 5. I'm honestly at my wit's end- I don't know what else to do but I'm just SO TIRED. :crying:

I guess I'll save up for a twin or full sized mattress and try again in a few months.

DS1 moved to a twin bed at 22 months. We have a bed rail, but use a body pillow for the other side. I've also heard about using pool noodles under the sheets to create more of a barrier, might work with a floor bed. DS1 totally impressed me with transitioning out of the crib and never had a big issue with it. Good luck!

@LulaBee: Yeah. Maybe I'm just more boring? ;) I'm pretty much the equivalent of valium to my kids at bedtime. But I know that being excited to see mom and dad is pretty common, too. Good luck!

@Mrs. Twine: I would be HAPPY to bedshare if she would actually sleep- we tried again last night and she kept sitting up in bed asking us to sing "Baa Baa Black Sheep". It's too fun to be in mom and dad's bed! :silly:

@LulaBee: My girls were both in floor beds around a year old. We bed-share for most of the night, though, so they were only alone until I was ready to go to sleep (so from maybe 9pm until 11pm). It's probably not a great solution if you are looking for better independent sleep (unless you think having more space would be useful), but @lilyann: made a great point in that parenting is ALL about trial and error. It wouldn't hurt anything to give it a go and see if it makes a difference. I hope it gives all of you some more restful nights!

@LulaBee: Its actually a bunk bed that we separated. So its as high as a normal bed but it does have a short rail all the way around except for the foot of the bed. She could barely climb up when we got it, but knows how to flip on her belly and slide down just fine.

@T.H.O.U.: So how high off the floor is she? Do you use bed rails? My DD is all over the crib at night so I would just worry about her falling off.

@lilyann: Thanks! I think we will take the crib out this week and see how it goes!

I put my DS on a floor bed around at 12 months. He transitioned really well and he seemed to sleep better with more room to move (we put him on a twin mattress). When he would go through a sleep regression, teeth, or get sick it was so much easier to go in there and lay down with him. I would see if you could move the crib out for a while and see if it works...so much of parenting is trial and error  Good luck!! I hope you all get rest soon!

We went ahead and set up her big girl room around 18 months. She wanted to sleep in the twin so we let her and her sleep was much better. Not great (still wakes up at night) but she just sleeps better on the pillow and blankets with room to stretch rather then the crib.

Personally, I don't think the floor bed would have worked for us, but on occasion she has slept on the floor when traveling. She does pretty well because they sleep on low to the ground cots at school.

My 18 month old daughter has NEVER been a good sleeper- but in the past week it's gotten so. much. worse. Part of it is that she has a cold, and her ears are draining (she had tubes put in on January 2). So we aren't willing to let her CIO at this point because she's sick, however she is up within 2-3 hours of going to sleep. Our bedtime routine hasn't changed, she used to go 6-7 hours before her first wake up. Now she's up, crying, and is having a hard time going back to sleep.

I've been thinking about putting her mattress on the floor- taking the crib out of the room. I honestly have no idea if she would do better or worse on a floor bed, but I have to try something. Has anyone had any experience with a floor bed at this age, or with moving to a big kid bed? I was thinking if she slept better on the floor, I would buy her a big mattress that will grow with her.

I've probably gotten more than 6 hours of sleep less than 10 times in her life. I'm at the end of my rope... and I know that she needs sleep too! Any advice is welcome, thank you!
