I can not see this happening at the hospital I'm going to. Within minutes of birth both my DD and I had these bracelets strapped onto us (mine=wrist, hers=ankle) that when they were within a certain distance from each other they would play a tune, if they weren't a match they wouldn't play the tune. We sent DD to the nursery a couple times and the nurse wouldn't leave the room until the tune played.

Funny story along these lines: I'm an identical twin and my family periodically jokes that my sister and I were switched at birth because on our birth documents, I was a 1/2" longer yet all through life my sister has been 1/2" taller. However, my sister has some prominent veins just below the skin on her right ankle which have been there since birth and I don't so that isn't actually the case.

I don't even want to think about this, makes me tempted to put a little dot of fingernail polish on her toe so I know she's mine ;) I had a very paranoid friend who did this just to give her piece of mind.

My daughter had (still has) one ear that has a little crinkle in it and I noticed it as soon as she was born. So, I would have known if they brought me a baby that wasn't mine. ("Where's the crinkle ear? She isn't mine!")

@Rubies: My siblings used to tell me my parents found me on the side of the road.

When I first saw LO, I didn't recognize her like I thought I would. I was sitting there thinking, well I didn't actually see her come out of my who-ha, how do I know she's mine? I guess that's the crazy that comes with all of those hormones when you give birth.

@sweetchic: I love that show too! I thought this post was going to be about it!

@sweetchic: I've seen it, but I couldn't get into it. In that case, I'd seriously wonder. I mean the ginger, fair skinned family ended up with a partially hispanic-looking daughter (and vice-versa) - what the heck?! lol I would have wondered. Plus you generally see YOUR baby right after birth, you would know the difference between a ginger and a dark baby (even if they had no hair at that point).

Oh gosh... I have no idea what I'd do. Sue? Take legal action?
But like you, I'd get them switched in the early weeks/months, but I think it'd be hard cause I'd probably already be attached to the other baby.

Later on, i would probably seek out my biological child, but not give up "my" child, and instead try to be a part of both their lives. I'd hope the other set of parents would want the same and that we got along/connected on a deep, familial level.

Oh man, scary! One of my fears is LO won't look anything like me and they'd accidentally switch her at birth. But I found out that my hospital allows the mother 2-hrs of bonding time immediately after birth so I'm not so worried anymore =P

My LO never left the room, but the thought did cross my mind. I'd like to think I would know, but you might not really. I think you'd just have to move next door to the other family and hope that you all got along.

I've never known anybody in real life where their babies were switched at birth but my husband's coworker's son was accidentally taken to another room and breastfed by another woman. This was years ago (I think his son is more than 10 years old).

@mediagirl: it's a hypothetical question!! Haha hospitals are so crazy these days. There's no way they're gonna let it happen!

@Mrs. Jacks: They took our Lo away a few times since she had jaundice.. I had her face and cry burned into my memory thiugh and checked her bands too! Helps that we live in the south and there aren't too many Asians around :D

M spent some time in the nursery, but we always did double and triple band checks. I would have known in a heartbeat if there was an issue... and Lala was never out of our sight, not even for 1 second.

It won't happen. At our hospital, the baby does not leave your room unless they are ill and need intervention. If that happens, Dad follows along with the baby to make sure she's never out of his sight.

Can you tell I just don't want to think about it? ;)

What would you do if you discovered that you took the wrong baby home?

If I found out NOW I don't think i'd do anything.
If I had found out within the first month of LO's life I'd probably want to swap for my biological child...?

I'm glad this doesn't happen very often these days. What a nightmare.
