@locavore_mama: Verizon just told my BIL that they can't do that apparently. So if they have to, and your bro is matter a fact about it, why does Verizon keep telling us no?

ETA- sorry, that sounded combative. I don't mean to! I just hate Verizon :)

@locavore_mama: it was probably just the carrier we were using at the time, they are a regional carrier who typically don't get the most current phones and if they do they only get a limited number of them. We looked at T-mobile and I know they require that you have had their service for at least 60 days before they will give you the unlock code.

@purrpletulips: I'm not sure if they have to by law? But my BIL was looking to switch to our family plan and he's on Verizon. My brother told me about it very matter of factly like it's no big deal?

@locavore_mama: do they have to by law? we changed carriers last August and tried to get the unlock code for less than a year old, purchased at full price Android phone and the carrier said they would not provide the unlock code. In the end, we switched to Verizon so the phone wouldn't worked.

@kjpugs: My brother has been in the cell phone business for over 15 years and currently has his own store. And yes you can do this. The phone is yours after you bought it. If you choose to leave your provider they have to unlock it for you so you can use it with other providers.

It is unlikely that he can keep the phone. There are very few phones that are both GSM (ATT/T-Mobile) and CDMA (Verizon/Sprint) These are typically called dual-band and more expensive. If the phone is that, then yes they would need to unlock it which they are not required to do by law. So to get them to do that is also nearly impossible. Your best bet is to sell the phone to someone who wants verizon and buy a new phone.

My BIL's phone bill is really high so we offered to let him join our family plan. He is leaving Verizon for ATT. ATT told me he could keep his phone but had to call the carrier after the line is cancelled and request an "unlock" to make it usable across carriers. The Verizon lady I talked to (we got pricing for family plans there too, ATT won BY FAR) acted like she had no idea that that was possible.

Has anyone done this? His phone is newer so he wants to keep it. It's an Android.
