I think the staff are everything in a day care. As others have said, biters are everywhere. Now may be a good time to make the switch especially if LO is about to be a toddler and will be entering pre-school there as well in the future. I had to make a similar decision around the same age. Although i loved the staff, I wasn't happy with my day care's facilities, and I toured a new place with much newer facility (both Montessori for profit centers). The director made me wait 30 minutes and did not even apologize. It just left a bad taste in my mouth and made me wonder about the culture of the center (not just the waiting but her general attitude during the tour). I decided that nicer facilities weren't worth it in my case and stayed with the original day care. DD is 4 now and happy in the pre- school and DS is now in the day care and I feel confident in the decision. Good luck with your decision!

I agree with you that biters are every where, and you could be exchanging two for four, however it is all about how the adults react to it (this is my philosophy for parenting too, it is all about how you react). If you are unhappy with that, it probably won't change.
I sent to my daughter to a profit driven daycare as well, and I don't know how unhappy the teachers were, but the director was nasty and I really hated that place by the end of her time there. Her transition happened just before two and it was great, but that's because I had a baby and she was home with me all the time and we have been home ever since.

I guess follow your instincts. If you don't like the current daycare take her out. Little kids are adaptable and though you might have some rough days, if the end result is everyone is happier (including your pocketbook!) then go for it.

@Thehistoryofus: Then I guess you just have to base it on how they've responded to your questions so far. Did they reply to your list of questions yet? And go with your gut feeling!

@Andrea: Yes, both are well respected centers in our area and I have heard positive things about the new center, but I also heard lots of positive things about the current center (my best friend sends her kids there and LOVES it but she hasn't had the issues we've had).

@Thehistoryofus: Have you spoken to any of the other parents? I asked for references and spoke to 3 parents before choosing our daycare. Of course they probably won't have you speak with anyone who will say too many negative things, but you never know what might come out over the course of a conversation.

@Andrea: Thank you. Yes, I think one of my biggest issues with the current place is that it is very corporate, profit driven. Because of that staff is unhappy and the director often doesn't take any action to solve problems (turnover, chaotic drop offs, biting, etc).

I just don't know how to ask for a better "responsive staff" at the new place? How do I ensure it will be better? We have done a scheduled tour at 10am, sent a follow up email with questions and dropped in for a tour at 5:15pm.

@MamaG: Unfortunately, I think the worst part about the current place is that there are two bad biters in the class. We very easily could find two biters in the new center. Again, not sure how to avoid this but I have heard the new center is stricter on the issue.

Since biting seems to be a big part of the dislike of the current situation, make sure you know what it is at the new place. I have a 15 month old as well. We transitioned her at 12 months to a new daycare. I love the daycare, but we have been dealing with biting for about two months now. Fortunately, I'm currently content with the daycare's response to biting and am comfortable with their handling. Our daughter never really went through separation issues. That being said, her transition was our mild version of "rough" for about 10 days.

It doesn't sound like you're very happy with your current place and you've tried to work with them, but they have not improved. I don't think the con list for the new place is too bad as long as you think they'll be more responsive when there are issues. I wouldn't worry too much about the transition for your daughter. I'm sure she will adjust quickly!

Any other thoughts or suggestions? I am at such a loss.

I don't want to keep her there so I can avoid making a decision but I need to be happy with where she is at everyday.

@Rubies: we've had a big issue with biting at the current center for the last few months (on average about once a week)

I havnt been happy with the staff at current center and how they have responded to these issues.

Is there a specific reason why you're thinking of moving her to a new place? Or, is it just an idea floating around?

I think the transition now might be tough at first but it sounds like you prefer the new place's staff? At her current center, are the kids biting already??? Sad!

Need some advice. My LO has been in a center since 3 months and is now 15 months (just over a year). We loved this center for the infant rooms (ages 6weeks-14months split in half). Now that she's in the toddler room we aren't so sure.

Current center pros:
Facility she knows
More bright and colorful
Long hours (6:30-6:30)
Current center cons:
Biting an issue
Chaotic drop off and pick up
Very institutional and profit driven

New center pros:
Homy and smaller
Slightly cheaper
Closer to home
Better staff attitude with more full time workers
New center cons:
Less hours (7-6)
Smaller room
Transition for her and possibility of issues following us.

Any suggestions?
