I wouldn't switch until after 2, that fat is good for brain development. We did switch to 1% when she hit two, just so we could buy one type of milk. She only drinks it at meal times.

I'd decrease intake personally. The fat is good for brain development!

It's funny, even at our 2 year old appointment our ped never mentioned switching to 2% (and I forgot to ask), so we're just sticking with whole. But my sister's ped told them to switch to 2% at her son's 1 year old appointment, because he's 50% for weight. Weird! I think doctors just have different philosophies.

I wouldn't feed my one year old 2% as a regular thing. Sometimes when we're out at restaurants that's all they have, but at home I buy whole for us. My kid is like 93% for weight and the pediatrician never brought up changing milk types.

I would just decrease how often we give it, too. We've had to do that, anyways, otherwise she fills up and eats poorly

Very interesting, thank you! My DH is skeptical. He's the type to follow Dr's orders 100%, whereas I'm much more cautious about things. I think we will just lower the amount given and only give at meals. She gets yogurt and cheese too so I'm not worried about her dairy intake.

Our ped said that lower fat milk actually has more sugar so we should stick to whole milk past 2 years (my son is lower, usually 25th percentile and my daughter is 80th for weight).

The issue with whole milk is that fat is really, really crucial for babies and toddlers and their growing brains. I would be more likely to look at other ways to improve my 1 years old's diet if my doctor felt that they needed fewer calories overall.

My LO is a big little guy and his pediatrician said whole milk until 2. We do limit it to 16 oz a day.

On the other side, we don't do milk at all, and our LO is the same stats. Nutritionally, kids don't really need milk if you're feeding them a varied diet. Because of that, if we did milk, I'd be fine with 2% at this age. It still has good fats.

I am also a fan of whole milk, for all ages. If you are concerned about weight I would be much more eager to eliminate all added sugars and processed foods from her diet, instead of decreasing fat.

We do 2% at 16 months. She's not big into milk and still breastfeeding, so it doesn't make sense to buy a 1/2 gallon of WCM just to have it go bad before it's even half done. I give her full fat yogurt and cheese.

Our ped mentioned it, but little guy (just over 2) is a peanut (not on the charts), so then the ped said never mind. So it does seem routine for her to recommend it, but we still do whole (and probably will continue to do so long after 2).

We just went in to my DD's 1 year appointment and she has jumped to 50% height and 96% weight from 12% and 73% respectively. She suggested that I switch to 2% milk from whole (we only just started cows milk a week ago). I just always thought babies should be on whole no matter what until 2 years. I think her reasoning was that DD might be filling up on it before meals. But I thought about just giving it to her during meals instead of between. I always thought whole milk is better as far as nutrition because of the way they process it compared to other. I might be totally off base though. Thoughts? Anyone switch to 2% at a year old?
