Before LO I always went with my DH when he traveled for business. I'd bring a ton of books, hang at the pool and spa, shop, then we'd meet up at night. Now with LO we've only gone with him a few times and we extended it to a real vacation. It was definitely not as relaxing to be with LO all day by myself on vacation - but still fun if it's a good location and there's stuff to do.

Before we had LO's I traveled with DH to Spain, Germany, SFran, NYC....but now it's just too much. I'm hoping once they are a little older I will be able to tag along sometimes.

I work FT and DH is a SAHD, we like to make family vacations out of the conferences I attend when they are in good places. In January we all went to Hawaii, I went to 5 days of meetings and we were there for 10 days. It was awesome.

If he's somewhere cool to visit he'll stay over the weekend and I'll meet him. My travel may overlap a day/time he's still working, but that's the extent of tagging along.

My job has me traveling with some frequency, but I don't think I would ever bring DH along even if it were somewhere awesome. I don't see it as worth it for him to use his vacation days when we wouldn't be able to spend hardly any time together. I work LONG days when I travel. It might be different if he SAH though.

Yes. But usually when it can be extended into a long weekend. We went to Vegas for 4 days for my birthday and drove one way to LA and stayed there for another couple days for Ms work. We went to Disneyland one night and I mostly hung out poolside.

My family has a beach house. So we go down, he will see his customer then we will already be there for the weekend.

So if it makes sense and I can make it into a mini vacation great. If not he goes on his own. I would never want to overdo it or distract him.

I think this depends so much on the atmosphere your husband will be working in (nonstop work with work dinners? Or more relaxed schedule?).

My husband doesn't travel for work but I had a conference last May in New Orleans and DH took some vacation days and came along with LO because my schedule was very relaxed--I just had 1 meeting and 1 conference session a day that were required--so we had a lot of time together to hang out. I was still pumping, so that took some time as well.

My husband travels about 2-4 times a month but he's usually only gone 2-3 days at a time. And he is nonstop busy often driving between meetings and flying out of a different city. So we don't tag along. He also does a lot of red eye flights which I am not a fan of with a young child. BUT a few times a year he has a conference somewhere cool. This year we are tagging along with him to go to Vegas and staying 5 days. Anything shorter than that it's not really worth it to me to disrupt our schedule. I did tell him I want to tag along the next time he has conferences in Dallas, Phoenix, San Diego or Boston

I used to love tagging along since my work is pretty flexible and I'm usually allowed to do some work remotely while he is busy. I haven't done any of those trips since LO was born though. It is harder now since I wouldn't be able to get work done so I'd have to use my vacation days. Next year DH may be going to Ireland for a conference so we may try to tag along to that.

My DH travels fairly often, but usually to boring places, or only for a couple days, so I have never tagged along. He's got a convention coming up in southern California though, so I think I'm going to tag along for that one. No LOs though, so I'll gladly spend my days on the beach reading/sleeping!

My husband went to the Bahamas on his most recent trip, but he was travelling with a coworker, and I knew if I tagged along, I'd be having dinner with them both and they'd be talking shop. Now, granted, I could have handled laying by the pool all day, but for whatever reason, I didn't go. I should have, though, sans child!

It probably depends on the type of trip. We did it all the time when LO was under 2 (and didn't require a plane ticket) since my work days always had a set end time and there was never the expectation of socializing after work. DH has a really flexible job and was keen to go. It was super fun. Even destinations that initially didn't seem so exciting ended up being really great (I had low expectations for Omaha, but they found an AMAZING children's museum and train museum and it was an awesome trip). If nothing else, it was great to have a change of scene. DD reverted to two naps a day after discovering a love for doing stairs at a hotel in Charlotte, we had beach picnics in Palm Beach, it was great. Dinners could be a little stressful, since we would pretty much have to go the moment I finished work, but a little planning made that a non-issue.

No LOs yet, but if DH went anywhere cool, I'd just take PTO and tag along unless he was expecting 12+ hr work days. He went to Taipei last year and I tagged along for 9 days and his work put us up in the Westin right in the city. He'd be back in time for dinner, had the weekend free, and even got out of work early one or 2 days so we still got to spend some time together.

@blackbird: yeah that's the other thing I worry about. Most of the time he has work dinners or people go for drinks after work, but he says the more often he goes, the less that will be an issue.

I used to travel a lot for my old job and it was always to cities, so he tagged along a couple of times and spent the weekend or whatever. It was fun, but obviously very different without a toddler.

DH has never gone anywhere cool enough for me to tag along to! The one awesome work trip I went on (Palm Springs), he had *just* started a new job, so he couldn't come. I usually end up at remote, dusty, gross military bases in the boonies. But Palm Springs would've been a good work trip, because it was a conference and everything ended at 4:00 every day and everybody else brought their families, too.

Otherwise, our work trips aren't family friendly. I end up working MORE on my work trips than I do when I'm in the office.

I work full time, and my husband doesn’t travel often (3-5 times a year), but we’ve tagged along a couple times and then tacked on a few extra days to make it a family vacation too. I just do a lot of research before we go, since I’ll need to spend the day with LO by myself. Last summer we went to DC and the conference hotel was about 3 blocks from the zoo, so we walked there and spent most of the day there, and then walking around to area attractions. Next month he has a conference in Vegas, which we are not coming with, and this summer he has a conference in San Francisco that we will come out for. I think it’s worth it since hotel and his flight is covered.

Well as you know I am definitely considering it! Usually he doesn't go anywhere super interesting, so we haven't done it yet...but otherwise I would. Being on my own all day wouldn't bother me at all. If we go to SD we will rent a house/condo by the beach so it's more convienient for me and LO...and also we don't have to go out for all meals etc. When would you be going?

Illumina's thread got me thinking more about this. If you SAH, or have a really flexible schedule, how often to you tag along when you SO travels for work?

DH travels a moderate amount, but it's usually short 2-3 day trips to not very interesting places, so I don't even consider those. But he potentially has some longer trips to the LA area and could stay in a suite hotel or rental condo, so we are considering all going. C is still under 2 so we'd only have to pay for my flight. But I'd be on my own during the day, so we haven't decided if it's worth it yet.
