@grizz: that's right, I'm a believer in discharge as soon as you can. Ultimately when you and your baby are cocooned in your room, you are about as safe as you can be in a hospital... And right after birth, baby has the benefit of all those maternal antibodies. You could still get something that a nurse, tech or doctor brings into your room, but there are rules about coming to work sick. It's an acceptable risk when you are talking about the risks of birth, but if I don't need to bring a child in, I won't. M has never been in my hospital even now!

@Mrs. Jacks: Eek! What about babies born in the hospital being exposed? I thought about that a lot after I had my son. We didn't want to hang around long before being discharged!

My sister brought her 4 month old to visit us in the hospital when my daughter was born, and it was the middle of flu season. It's not as though you'll be letting your baby crawl around on the floor. I wouldn't worry for a moment.

I wouldn't! MRSA, flu, rotavirus and RSV all live in hospitals. I wouldn't take an infant into a hospital unless I absolutely needed to.

Our maternity ward doesn't allow non-sibling children. IDK, I just wouldn't bring a 12 week old to the hospital. Especially if they go to daycare.

Well, I called and it was a moot point afterall. Apparently, children who aren't siblings need to be 12 or older to visit. Geeze. :| Thanks everyone for the replies/advice, though! :)

Well I took my 10 week old to visit a friend who had her baby. She slept in her car seat and I held her and it was no big deal.

I wouldn't bring MY 12 week old, because she was (and still is) too much if a cranky pants. I'm not sure if I would if she was more chill. If rather visit them at home after I guess.

I personally would not expose my child to the germs and definitely not any of the newborns to any that your LO might be carrying.

The hospital we had LO at wasn't fussed about that at all. My friend came to visit with her 14 week old when LO was born and no one batted an eye. He was sleeping in his pram and when he started stirring, she only took him out to feed him and then put his back down. He didn't come in contact with my newborn at all, not that I was worried about it. And he had just had open heart surgery a few weeks before and there were no concerns about him being exposed to germs either.

Maybe it was different because I gave birth in a mother's hospital - the entire hospital is either pregnant mothers at risk of preterm labour, women in labour, women who have just given birth, and the NICU. The hospital campus has separate buildings for patients who are unwell, so really, the risk of germs in the mother's hospital was fairly low comparatively.

@ZombieBullfrogHoller: the hospital I'm affiliated with is very liberal, however, during flu season, anyone who hasn't had a flu shot (unless they are necessary) aren't aloud on the maternity ward, and that includes infants who are not old enough to receive it

Not during flu season though I would have taken my son and just warn him so that he stayed close to me and didn't touch anything

Good point. I think I'll call now and ask. Better to find out for certain now than to wonder and find out we have to sit outside with him when we get there! haha

Call the hospital. I know that the hospital I'm delivering at doesn't allow child visitors during really bad flu seasons.

I say neh. Wouldn't take the risk of your LO germs getting to the newborn. Plus the hospital might not let you. Mine only allows siblings under 3.

I know a lot of maternity wards do not allow young children who are not other children of the new mom to enter. Ours doesn't. You need to call the hospital, because this could all very we'll be a moot point.

I know I've seen threads on this topic before, but can't find any of them to save my life.

So, my husband's cousin is having her baby within the next week. This will be her third child, she has two children under 4, but this is her first boy. We're so excited for them and I want to go and visit her after he's born. They live a distance away (not terribly far, but far enough that we're not able to go and see them often). When I asked her about visiting, she expressed that she was excited to meet our LO since they hadn't yet. That got me thinking...

D is 12 weeks. Is it okay if I take him to the maternity ward? Firstly, there's the whole germ-thing, but I don't know if I'm overreacting about that. We took him to the ER with us when he was about 9 weeks because I was having chest pains in the middle of the night, so no choice and I was a bit paranoid then. But are there restrictions with bringing children under a certain age to visit? I thought I'd read that somewhere but don't know if that's a hard-fast rule. I can always call the hospital to find out.

What do Bees think? I can always see if MIL wants to watch him, but she'll probably want to go with us (neither her nor my husband drive) :P
