One great piece of advice my lifeguard/swim coach friend gave me was not to react strongly if something happens that could be scary (splashed in the face, water up the nose, face plant in the water, etc) so they don't learn that water is scary.

@Cherrybee: Good! Our LO loves his bath and the pool too! We were prepared though that he was going to hate it based on my niece's experience and were pleasantly surprised that he loved it!

Swimming with them can be so much fun! I would suggest some toys (I am sure the pool has some), swim diapers, a floaty device like a boat, and limiting it to a short period at first (30 mins). Also expect some crying once they get out of the pool and get changed and possibly getting pee'd on in the process! Oh and try not the rush the getting changed thing, panicing seemed to make it worse :)

@2PeasinaPod: She loves the bath so I'm hoping she will like the pool. If it's warm enough of course!

Ditto on the swim diapers.

Two things we did that helped:

1) Gradually bob her into the water, submerging a bit more of her body with each bob. E took swim lessons, and the instructor told us that doing this helps to let their bodies get used to the water pressure gradually, so it's not such a shock.

2) Kept him held very close to our chest.

E didn't like his first swimming experience, but he LOVES being in the water now, so don't be discouraged if your E doesn't like it at first.

ETA: He loved it when we sang "Wheels on the Bus" during his lessons. For lines like "Children on the bus go up and down" we'd raise him in and out of the water, and for "doors go open and shut" we'd push him a foot or two away from us (holding him under the elbows) and then back to us.

Aww! We took C for the first time at around that age! She loves the water.

We had one of those swim seat floater things. We got ours at Mothercare. It's too bad you don't live closer, because I still have it! I could always post it to you. Lol

For that age the only swim diapers I could find were reusable ones online in size small. The white iplay was so much easier than the cute ones because it has all snaps on one side. My LO hasn't pooped in it, but a friend on mine's LO has and it contained the poop

Definitely pick up some swim diapers. While it might not necessarily help with pee, it will with poo!

We had a fun little innertube for babies that we would put him in and float him around...we were always right there with him while he was in it, but he loved being able to kick his own feet!

My niece absolutely hated the pool the first time she was in it...don't get discouraged if she doesn't like it at first. Keep trying with her and make her feel safe. Try to stay away from splashing kids unless she's ok getting her face wet.

Have lots of fun!!

I'm so excited!! DH has next week off work and we are taking our 11 week old daughter on her first little holiday! We are off to Devon for four nights.

There is a heated swimming pool where we are staying so we are going to take DD swimming for the first time. We have bought her a little swimming costume/wet suit thing (it's so cute!). What else do I need to know?

Do you like taking your LO swimming? How long do you stay in the pool for (and how old is your LO?). What do you do with him/her while you are in the pool? Do you take any flotation devices in with you? How do you manage the getting changed situation?!!

Tell me all about it (and get me even more excited!).
