@locavore_mama, yes please, i'd appreciate it! I've only really canned jams and jellies and tomatoes before. I have a Ball cookbook at home i need to check out. I feel like it recommends salt in almost everything, though, which is obv a no-no.

@abbylyn, oh peach sauce would be good, too. Definitely yellow peaches. I need to go pick some from the farm soon. They're so amazing. Thanks for the tip!

You can make and can peach sauce using the same method as applesauce! I love it, it's like a little bit of summer all year long. Yellow peaches won't need any extra acidity, but if you're using white peaches, add a tablespoon of lemon juice to each pint of sauce.

@blackbird: I'll try to dig up the one I used for pears.

Agree on skipping bananas and avocados. Not like they're local anyway. I like canning the local in season stuff so I don't have to buy crap from Mexico if I don't have to.

I've never canned before, but the ethnic grocery store I shop at had a one-day special yesterday-- white peaches, 3lbs/$1!!!! So I bought a gripload. I think we'll be able to eat them before they spoil (my mom and I like hard, crunchy peaches and LO eats the soft ones) but I want to can if they go on sale again.

Okay so i'll definitely make applesauce! Although I don't have to start that for awhile.

So...maybe purees are a bad idea for her age, then.

Canning it is! I've never canned without sugar for a preservative, so I'll have to dig up some recipes.

apples, peaches, pears, berries....

I also read that bananas and avocados are good, but those are fine year round.

@blackbird: i canned applesauce last fall when i was pregnant. I'm glad i did it b/c now L is 6.5 months and I have not made ANY purees..I really thought it would be something that I would enjoy but we've been traveling so much this summer that, well, ain't nobody got time for that. I am also loving BLW because it's so lazy (giving L cooked veggies to gnaw on, pieces of bread, slices of cucumber, that kind of thing!)

@blackbird: Canning lasts longer! :)

I canned applesauce and peaches. They were sooo delicious! We had fresh peaches which were perfect for early BLW because they were sooo ripe and juicy that LO just sucked all the juice out.

I think this year I will can at least double the apples if not 2.5x. Definitely peaches and pears because those are LO's favorites.. I have frozen cantaloupe in my freezer and the texture is different so I'm not sure I would puree those?
Also want to do blueberries. Not sure what else yet!

Frozen purees are best within 2-3 months. I want to say 2 but I'm not sure it's been a while since I looked that up.

Right berries are very cheap so I have a lot or berries in my freezer but I dont like to keep them for more than a week or two.

Do you remember what foods you made? I've been debating if i should can or freeze...canning is more work, though =\.

Apples are in season here in a couple of months! I'll probably go pick them from the farm nearby :) SO GOOD!

@blackbird: when we were just starting it was late summer/fall so I made a lot of purees and froze in ice cube trays and canned a lot of stuff. I'm def canning A LOT more this summer and early fall.
I also made a ton of applesauce that LO devoured. I ended up paying more in the winter from a local farm that freeze stored apples! Applesauce is great for the whole family. I use it in oatmeal, as a natural sweetener in baking (waffles, pancakes, etc).

So i really want to do baby led weaning but I also realize that some food pouches/purees may be convenient and ideal to send to daycare (maybe just do BLW for breakfast and/or dinner? Dunno! Not there yet!)....and all the summer produce is *so good* right now.

What should I take advantage of making while things are ripe? Peaches, bell peppers, and melons are great right now...
