@wheres_c: thanks! we are going to puerto rico. i wasn't sure if taking her into the pool was okay yet. we bought two bathing suits for her but i don't know if she'll even like water that isn't bath temperature.

i am so jealous of your all in warmer climates....winters are so hard with a baby!

@Mrs. Jacks: have fun on your vacation!

We're heading off for a tropical vacation next week and I hope to blog (if I have time) about tropical vacationing with babies.

I may be in the minority, but I didn't take either of my girls into the pool until 6 months. In fact, my second daughter had severe eczema when we did bring her in at 6 months. I think the chlorine can be kind of harsh for tender skin.

@JessLC: oh and where are you going?
I was in Cancun this time last year and the pool was too cold for a baby.
Definitely buy swim diapers obvs if you plan on using the pool.

Im in south florida, where the weather is about 80 degrees.
Like Mamabehr said, just breastfeed as much as possible. (Women breastfeed babies in much warmer climates)

If the pool is heated or really warmed by the sun it is probably ok. I plan on starting LO in swim class here at 3 mo. If it is too cold, that could be an issue? Also i might be a bit apprehensive that his first time in a pool is on vacation, just in case he has a reaction to the chlorine. Is there a indoor pool you could try near you first? Im sure its fine though.

I would buy baby sunglasses before you go, and maybe a tiny umbrella, because even though they have them on the beach they may not have them at the pool.

As a northern who migrated (ha!) to the south I have a few tips, but it isn't as different as you would think!

85 degree isn't that hot, especially if it isn't too humid. Just make sure that your LO doesn't over heat, which is easy to control when they are that little. Keep her cool by staying in the shade, indoors, or a short dip in the pool. I don't know what the general consensus is about pools, but I say you could take her in for a little bit. Just make sure she doesn't get any water in her mouth.

If you suspect she is dehydrated, nurse nurse nurse. That's the only thing you can really do at that age.

I also don't remember the rules for sunscreen. I know that they aren't suppose to get it before 6 months, but my pediatrician actually told me to put it on DS before he was 6 months old because he is so fair skinned. We just attempted to keep him out of the sun and used floppy hats.

Have fun! It sounds like it will be awesome!!

We are going on vacation to the Caribbean next week where it is going to be 85 degrees and sunny every day! Yippy! It'll be very different than the Northeast, so I was wondering if I need to be worried about baby getting too hot or dehydrated. LO will be 16 weeks and is EBF. Any tips for that and in general? Also can I take her into the pool at this age? What are the most important things to bring with us?
