I am strongly against babies in floats. My husband was a lifeguard and he had to rescue lots of babies from those floats. I suggest holding your LO.

@Mrs. Pen: I don't think so. Maybe iplay. I don't think they absorb the pee, because they would just absorb the pool water, and weigh the baby down. I could be wrong though.

@Smurfette: just ordered that same one based on your pic! Love the little activity center. E can sit up really well and does SUPER great in her jumper/walker so I felt confident with it. We also just applied for a townhouse that has a pool so it should get some use as long as we get approved!! EEE!

We're going to be on vacation in FL next week so I called my peds office to get some advice about bringing DS (4 months) in the pool with us. What they told me is:

- Sunscreen is ok, they said better to use a little bit than to have baby get burned. They ok'd Mustela, Blue Lizard and Neutrogena Baby.
- Use a hat with a brim and a long sleeve rash guard
- Rinse chlorine off of baby afterwards

I used california baby sensitive sunscreen when J was 4 months old because we had a family vacation. I had originally tried aveeno but he broke out into a rash.

To limit sun exposure I had bought a long sleeved rash guard with swim trunks, and a charlie banana swim diaper- I have one in his current size and it's great. I think it actually does hold the urine in the diaper?

I know at our YMCA pool the rule is that a baby must wear a swim diaper, a plastic cover AND swim bottoms so that there are three layers of protection.

J wasn't a huge fan of the swim floatie until he was a little older - so we mostly just held him. I really wanted one of those water slings! But he loved it when he was 1+. But every baby is different.

I have a strong aversion to those inner tube/leg hole floaties. I understand the sun protection purpose with an infant, but I don't like the (functional) design of the inner tube-style floaties, and I really prefer to hold babies in the pool. If you want a flotation device, I'd get a life vest.

For sun protection, I would do a hat, long-sleeve UPF rash guard, and an umbrella or shaded area poolside.

Hat, long sleeved rash guard....and with that, I wouldn't worry about sunscreen, since she won't have any uncovered skin in the sun (and she shouldn't be out in the sun for long periods).

I second the hat and rash guard. You can get one-piece or two pieces, and it will cover her whole body. I wouldn't worry about the age restrictions listed on the floaty, if she's enjoying herself and seems safe. You will be right there with her anyway, if she is unstable or scared you'll just take her out.

If it's a true swim diaper you don't need anything underneath. It's only meant to hold poop, not pee. So wait till the last possible minute to put that on.

No sunscreen before 6m. She shouldn't be out that long in the pool anyway.

How strong is she at sitting up at this point? You're not going to leave her alone in the floaty so i think with someone right there you should be OK.

I would minimize the time LO is spending in the pool especially a public pool due to chlorine levels. And sun exposure at a outdoor pool. Make sure they're under a shaded area when you're lounging. I bought a uv protected mesh tent for my LO.

R was 5 months when we used something like this for her in the pool. She was able to sit up on her own so we felt ok using it, despite she was a peanut then. Plus we were right there anyway. She just sat there with her sunglasses and hat one. And the shade over her. We went ahead and used some sunscreen. But she wasn't in the sun long at all. Maybe 20-30 mins. Just a little and then we made sure to give her a bath that night. Her pedi said that it was fine to do it. We use the swim diaper as well. It is just to catch the poop. Not going to absorb the pee.

When we took M to the pool in Pensacola, over the summer, her first year (she was 3 months) I put her in a one piece rash guard thing that covered her arms and legs and put a hat on her so no skin was showing. I just held her at that age but I'm not sure what I would have done at 5 months...maybe a pool floaty. Also, why not a pool floaty like that if you're going to use it more than once! If she hates it, you can always try again another time.

I would just limit the time in the sun. We didn't stay in the pool long b/c she wasn't the hugest fan, or it didn't seem to excite her. It was nicer just to sit on the pool deck, in the shade, and relax.

The swim diaper's sole purpose it to catch poop, so just a tip, do not put the diaper on before you get in the water, like when you're in transit via the car seat. The pee will just leak out. It's the chlorine's job to take care of that in the pool.

I also use a mineral sunscreen, but just be aware, that it may take a little light scrubbing with a wet washcloth to completely remove it. And, if you go the mineral route, you don't need to get a specific "baby" formula.

I used mineral based sunscreen rather than chemical sunscreen early on because like you said, its florida and they need protection.

LO will be 5 months old in a few days. At the end of the month we have friends in town (orlando- so it's hot) who invited us to go to the pool at their resort with LO.

A few questions from any moms who have taken their younger babies to the pool....

1- Swim Diaper. I bought a fisher price one at BRU and figured it would have instructions... nope. And of course I can't find it online AT ALL. Is it in place of a regular diaper? A diaper COVER? HOW DOES THAT WORK?

2- Sunscreen. I thinK i remember that babies under 6 months shouldn't have any on them? But I have a little sample packet of infant sunscreen and it doesn't say anything about it. I'm unsure what to do here.

3- Shaded floaty. I've seen a few of the floaty-rafts that babies can sit in with a shade over it. The one I was looking at at BRU said 9-24 months on it. LO is really big for her age (the checkout lady asked if she was 7 months) but I don't think that's a very good idea. I later saw one that was 6+ months but I didn't like the style as much. Anyone have any luck? I have a hat and sunglasses for her, but want to shade her as much as possible.

Any other tips for the pool with a little one?
