@matador84: I'm sorry. How long has he been on formula? I understand being worried about the puking. Can they hold off (or push earlier) the 4:30 feed so you can nurse him when you get there.

I had a lot of success with a $40 electric single pump. It would make the car ride pump easier (one handed). Try some of those. Medela is good but may not be the right one for you. Ameda might be better. It was the one I preferred when I pumped in the morning.

Hey everyone-well what a night it has been for ds and I! Just now getting a second to reply and then I'm packing in...exhausted.

@thehistoryofus I think the car idea is super great and I would never have thought of that, but it only takes 8 mins from home to daycare and daycare to work so I'm not sure if it be worth set up, etc. plus I'm literally running in work already to make it on time. :-(

I got in a pump session at 1130, 330 and 930 today and got 10 pz total the whole day. Kind of happy but still sad in the grand scheme of things. I ironically had a friend visit me tonight who works in the pharmaceutical industry and asked her about regular and she asked to me about the package insert and after a lengthy conversation with her I actually feel comfort lie taking the reglan and praying it will help. especially since DH had a 3 oz bottle of formula at daycare at 430...and threw up major at 630 and again at 830...my heart is broken! He was happy but it was so sad! Is making me go anti-formula even more now seeing him like that! I mean I was covered shoulders down in baby puke :-( felt so bad for my little guy.

@zippylef @brownie I actually was using a hospital grade pump for 2 months but it made no difference in my output...so sad! Medela symphony. But, I'm so different now and LO is out of the NB stage and almost 5 months so I'm considering renting again on top of reglan if needed.

Blahhhh!!! That's about how I feel tonight!

@brownie: I second the suggestion of another pump!

@matador84: Is there any way you could maybe rent a hospital grade pump for a couple months to jump start things? They make a WORLD of difference.

@matador84: one thing I had to let go of is the oz especially compared to others. Some women only have 2 oz in each side but those 2 oz are jam packed with calories for their baby. Other women make skin milk but lots of it. Your body makes what your baby needs at the time.

@matador84: I found an early morning pump while nursing o. The other side was fantastic. It's the only time I would go past 3 oz. otherwise at work, I would pump about 4 oz each time I pumped for about 8-10 oz a day. I was only away for 2 feeds. So the morning oz supplemented.

You sound very committed and that is fantastic. There are a number of moms who supplement and there is no shame in that. We have been supplementing since 9 months because of failure to thrive. I had the oz but he needed even more calories. Send the milk you have, send some formula it will all be good. Then when you are with him nurse like crazy. Seriously like he is a newborn on demand and often. The weekend where he spits up cues me to think you probably make enough.

I also hate to suggest this, but you may want to try a different pump. Women respond to pumps differently and a different brand may work better for you.

Once all day is not enough to pump. During that time period I'd be pumping 3-4 times! Also the rushing around is no good. It's easy for me to see the difference in output when I'm stressed out. You should add a night session soon before your supply regulates. And I agree about pumping in the car. But the best would be to add sessions while you're at work.

@matador84: Yea, Honestly, that is probably your problem with not pumping enough. If you seriously are committed to breast milk I would wake up in the middle of the night to pump.

You could also try to pump in the car on your way to/from work. I found that even if it was just 5 minutes in the car it was worth it because it signaled to my body that there was an extra nursing session.

@autumnlove I feel you! It was weird too. I think it worked at first because I smelled like lovely maple but after a while it stopped even though I was taking so much!

@thehistoryofus I am so jealous of friends who can get 8 oz in one session! I'm like ok, that is so amazing. I can really only pump twice. I'm a teacher so I can only pump on off periods. I get in about 15 mins of pumping and that is flying and near spilling milk about 10 times because I rush so much. It sucks! No pun intended. :-) DS is sleeping through night pretty much so I think I need to add a night pump session because I wake up huge!

@matador84: I am so sorry you are having to go through this.

It sounds like you are pumping so thats great! How many times per day are you able to pump? Is there any way you could increase the number of times you pump and/or the length for which you pump? I know when I increased my pump time from 15 min to 22 min, I got a second let down and got an extra 2 ounces per pumping session! Over three pumping sessions that almost doubled my output.

This is a great article that I like to reference people

@matador84: I haven't heard that one. So, you aren't producing 14 to 21 ounces in the same time that you are away from him.

It is tough to figure out. One thing to note is that your breastmilk changes as your baby gets older. It changes to have more calories.

It sounds though, that you made enough for him this weekend (spitting up the supplemental). So that is promising.

@brownie I have been using the general rule of thumb where if he sucks 2 bottles dry in a row I increase the next bottle by 1/2-oz to 1 oz. I'm away from him from 730 until at least 5 everyday so he's right at about...he was taking 3 bottles but now is Dow. To 2 bigger bottles at daycare plus cereal. So tough to figure it all out!

@merryc that is so interesting your LC said that. I am so so on he fence about it still! Definitely frustrating.

I had a brief chat with my LC about it. She actually prefers supplementing with formula over the prescriptions, because of potential side effects and just the unknowns of off label use when nursing. I was desperate to increase my supply, and considered reglan, but what I read online honestly scared me - I think it was making PPD really intense after stopping or something like that....but basically serious lasting effects after stopping the meds. Luckily my kids did really well with formula, so it was an easier call than you might have. My intent is not to freak you out, but I'd recommend having someone, like hubby, just keep an eye on you physically and emotionally when you quit it. Best of luck! It's so hard struggling with supply issues.

@matador84: Somehow, this just updated with all of the conversation between zippylef and you (she isn't wrong). But, why is your son taking 5-7 oz of breastmilk per feeding? The rule of thumb is that they should have 1 1/2 to 2 oz per hour they are away from you. So, I worry that daycare is over feeding him and creating unrealist expectations (no woman can do that).

@matador84: He had the runs for the whole week and was fussier than usual. That is his reaction to dairy/soy. He also didn't gain weight.

Watch how it is prescribed as well. I was supposed to take 4 one day, 3 the next 2 days, 2 the next 3 days and 1 for 4 days or something like that. It was just a quick prescription. I ultimately never made it to 4 a day and so I weaned really quick.

It helped the production with a boost that I needed and have since been able to maintain (my little boy is 20 months old now and I did this at 8 months).

The tardive dykinesia was the first thing my LC warned me about when we discussed it as an option.

I just want to say. My daughter has been totally formula fed since she was about 2-3 months old. She's crazy smart and healthy. There is NO shame in having to supplement or switch.

@matador84: Don't know the percentage, but I do know that there is a lawsuit pending against the drug because of it. It was filed this summer.

"According to court documents, on July 31st, 2012, five plaintiffs filed a lawsuit in Superior Court of California, County of San Francisco (case no. CGC-12-522813) alleging that Reglan, and generic versions of metoclopramide, caused them serious side effects, including Reglan tardive dyskinesia. Reglan is a drug used to help with the digestive process and reduce the symptoms of acid reflux and heartburn. It has been in the market since 1996. In November 2010, the FDA issued a warning that treatment with metoclopramide can cause tardive dyskinesia (TD), a serious movement disorder that is often irreversible."
