I just was thinking - it can't hurt to try a faster nipple too. The main reason to avoid faster flow is if you are also BFing & to avoid nipple preference. The only other negative I can think of would be eating too quickly & gas/spitup but if E has never had an issue with that I wouldn't be too concerned.

I have had the inverted nipple issue a few times and figured out that I was screwing the top too tight - could that be it? Also started with medela but flow was too fast. Now we use tommee tippe and so far so good.

The nipple with the green base looks like the ones we use in the hospital, and they're a slow flow nipple... so maybe she needs a faster flow nipple??

Have you tried a Medela calma nipple? That one works well for us.

Update- Tomee Tippee is a major no-go. It inverted just like the medela. I don't have an Avent like I thought, it's a Similac bottle, so I'll try that.

Anyone know of any nipples that I can buy that fit the medela bottles? They're the standard size that fit with a pump, my Ameda pump bottles fit the same nipples, and it's the same size as the 2 ounce single-serve formula tubes you can get, etc. So I know it's more standard, just wonder if I can find new non-medela nipples to fit them so I can keep using them until she graduates to a more than 5 ounce bottle.

Im a hardcore Dr Browns fan. They are awesome, and I definitely saw a reduction in gas issues.

The Avent cause projectile vomiting in our house. I hated them.

@daniellemybelle: that's good to know re: S, H, and E all doing the same thing while feeding lately!!! I must have missed that on the thread! It's great that she's so curious/alert (even in a dark, quiet room, if she's not exhausted!) but man is it annoying! LOL

I think I have an avent bottle too that I will try!

We started with Playtex drop-ins, which I like but the plastic liners are wasteful & the cost adds up. We recently started using Dr Browns with the preemie nipple & I love them. I don't think the cleaning of the parts is that bad. She can manuveur the Dr Brown nipples really well & the preemie flow has helped with bottle preference though you don't have to worry about that. I don't like Tommee Tippees - she mashes the nipple like in your picture. She has never had an issue with mashing other nipples, but my LC did say that Avent nipples are the best if you're having that issue. I have a couple Avent bottles & the nipples are definitely firm. I just don't use them because they don't have a vent or any gas prevention mechanism.

@evansjamie and I were just talking about this in relation to nursing though & I think it just the age! They are more observant & get distracted and impatient while eating.

Medela nipples flowed really fast for my LO and caused a lot of gas. He would just eat way too quickly and then spit up a lot. We only used those for a couple feedings and switched immediately to Playtex with the drop-in liners. We used slow flow nipples on those until he was about 5 or 6 months old? Then used medium until he weaned off bottles at 13 months.

I had good luck with the cheap gerber bottles.

That looks like a newer medela nipple, do you have any older ones?

FWIW, I breastfed until a year, but she always stayed on the slowest flow nipple at daycare.

we've used both dr. brown's and philips avent--both with the wider bottles and nipples. DH didn't like the avent because there was some leaking (this didn't happen with me but i'm taking his word for it even though it may have been ahem user error) so we just stuck with dr. brown's, but oh what i would give not to clean the 50-million parts of the dr. brown's bottles every friggin day.

@kjpugs: when M started doing that with her nipples, I moved to the Tommee Tippee bottles. I held her mostly upright while feeding (for gas issues) and held the bottle sideways (not upside down) to allow her to suck, instead of letting the bottle do the work. TT bottles were miracle workers for us when we started running into issues. I found them at TJ Maxx!!

We loved dr browns then later playtex drop ins. Regular bottles seem to cause gas. We even tried when dd was around 8 moths and still...gas. At that age we were still on slow flow but you could try medium. Different brands' levels of flow differ though. It also could have nothing to do with the bottle and everything to do with a new level of awareness!

I have some bottle questions. LO is 11 weeks tomorrow. She is exclusively bottle fed (was 1/2 and 1/2 BM/formula but I'm pretty much dried up now, sadly.)

Just this week she's seemed to fuss while feeding. Not unhappy fuss, just moves her head around, does little back bends, kicks, etc. She seems more alert/active in general, so not sure if that's related to her growing in general, or to feeding.

We've been using Medela bottles since she was born, mostly with the nipples we got from the hospital (green base) and sometimes with the medela nipples. The medela nipples would be great except they seem to always flatten out when she's eating (I'll notice it- she'll be sucking and not getting anything) and then I pull it out of her mouth and they do this (see picture.) They've always done that for as long as we've used them, so we use them rarely. I have no idea why they do that, and if it's a problem for others, or if it's just her?

I tried both and she's fussing while eating with both types of nipples.

Does this mean she needs to go up to a new flow nipple?

What bottles/nipples do you all recommend? I honestly would have no idea what to buy. She's eating about 3 oz per feeding now, and it will clearly only go up, so if I have to buy new bottles I'll likely buy larger ones.

All suggestions welcome! (I'll post pics in a second from my phone.)
