I second (third?) the idea of the game to teach her to climb down. If you put the foam mat (and maybe a rug or fabric on top to be prettier?) down for insurance that could help too. If you take it away, she'll probably find something else to fall off of, you know?

@Cherrybee: ahh gotcha. I wonder when babies learn about danger? Mine keeps trying to nosedive off the guest bed (which is where I fold laundry).

@LovelyPlum: That's a good idea. We have a foam playmat we could use there.... it's just it's in the lounge and the playmat isn't exactly stylish!! I guess I can't have it all!

@Grace: E's entire life is one long adventure in unsafe! She has no sense of danger at all. I always stop her, I just meant that she wont *learn* how to climb down safely during those interactions because she is freaking out and fighting me off!

Could you maybe put a yoga mat or something similar in front of it to cushion the fall a bit?

We practiced flipping around and going down on his tummy a lot at that age off the big sofa and our bed. It helped and he still will do it if he is unsure at the park, etc.

E does it. Yeah she's nose dived off a few times. I figure she'll learn how to control her body and probably won't break anything

@Cherrybee: I think the game is a great idea. But also, if she's doing something unsafe, you have to stop her, screaming or not. She has to learn that unsafe behaviour is a non- negotiable.

@Cherrybee: the whole beginning of this story cracked me up. Your dogs are so nice- mine would be so grumpy and dejected if c took over his bed.

I don't really have any advice though, since we don't have a chair like that and c seems to be much more cautious. I've been trying to teach her the idea of climbing off things backwards (like sliding backwards off the couch or going down stairs) and have gotten nowhere at all. She did take one nose dive off a low couch and I just barely caught her by the diaper to slow the forward roll.

I do think having a thick carpet would help somewhat. Sorry to hear about the bedside table/ lamp incident. That sounds scary- and is why c isn't allowed in our bedroom other than when she is in the bed with is and we are actively wrangling her. Way too much to try and baby proof in there!

R stands on her Anywhere chair but has only fallen off of it once. Splat, head first onto the carpet. But she also used to try to dive head first off the couch. I always hold onto her and make her go feet first so she's finally getting it. Watch her dive head first today now, ha.

He loves his pbk chair. But he does do that a lot! The thing with the pbk chair is that it's soft so when he stands on the arm it kind if squishes down so he's closer to the ground and the fall isn't as far. We also keep it on the rugs not on the wood floor.

@Cherrybee: I didn't mean to scare you but I do say it a lot! DD loves her chair so I wouldn't get rid of it, besides then she would just be jumping off the couch. Haha Maybe just a padded mat for the floor instead of the room :P That must of been so scary the other day. So glad E is ok.

@AprilFool: Really? :crying: :crying: I'm going to go grey at this rate!!! I know in my heart that this isn't safe for her..... and we had an incident last week where something I was determined wasn't safe but DH just said I was being overcautious proved to be exactly that - not safe (we hadn't tethered the bedside cabinet to the wall and she pulled it plus a glass lamp on top of her, which smashed. She was okay but it could have been much, much worse) - and so I'm going with my gut every time from now on.

Perhaps the chair needs to go completely?? Hmm.

@AprilFool: Ahh, so it's a pretty standard phase then?! Good to know. I tell you, my kid has ZERO sense of danger. I think a padded cell might be our only option (for me, not for her!!!)

@Grace: Yeah, I guess that's the key..... but the thing with E is she loses her temper REALLY quickly if you try to stop her doing what she wants to so it's hard to teach her anything in the heat of the moment (eg "I want that toy, I'm going to nose-dive to get it, agh stop touching me!"). I might have to make a specific game of getting on/getting off and see if she can learn that way. She can go from sitting nicely on it straight to standing and walking away but she will insist on climbing on it in crazy positions!

LO loves to stand in her Anywhere Chair so I think it might just be a universal kid thing Haha. She has only tipped backwards once, luckily. She has never nose dived but she sits and slides out forwards.

We have a tiny leather sofa for our little doggies and, well, DD has decided that it's hers! The dogs don't mind - in fact one has made a new bed on a cushion DD threw behind the TV so she's making reparations - and I was able to sterilise it since it's leather but the problem is that DD keeps trying to stand on it (then falls off, head first onto the laminate floor). She also doesn't understand that she has to dismount carefully and just nosedives off it (cue lots of crying and yet another bruise on her forehead).

Did your child do this with their PBK Anywhere Chair (or similar brand)? Does the Anywhere Chair have built in safety features I don't know about? I'm considering buying her a baby armchair of her own (and putting the dog sofa away until she understands not to climb on it) but I know this isn't going to stop the problem of her nosediving.......

What did you do??!
