@fussygal: With one family I work for their compromise on the issue is to leave it off most of the time. Usually we can here the baby just fine but for the times we will be in the basement or doing dishes etc we flip it on. My understanding though is you need to flip the camera unit off to avoid the radiation issue so it does take some thought beforehand. I believe they leave it off overnight since their room is steps away.

I agree with PP - I see it as the same as WiFi. I use it but in general I tried to avoid having my phone or computer next to my stomach while pregnant and I try to keep at least a few inches between my baby and phone or iPad while nursing now. The monitor is set up a few feet away from her when she's in her crib.

I honestly never really thought of this. The monitor is way up on her wall. You get radiation from everything, so I'm not too concerned

@fussygal, well, our video monitor is probably 12 feet away from her, if that helps! i have it set up on the opposite side of the room so i can see the whole crib in one glance, without having to scan back and forth or zoom in.

I freaking love ours. It's so cute to stalk her in her sleep, too :)

I love, love our video monitor. I couldn't live without it. I know LO's sleep patterns and can judge when to go in there and get him up for the day, etc. Benefits far outweigh the risks.

@LuLu Mom @bao: That's what I'm thinking - that the peace of mind out weighs any negatives.

@blackbird: Yeah, my thoughts exactly. But DH was worried about something that would be so close to her for hours on end.

I honestly found the video monitor to be pretty useless and I had a child that didn't sleep through the night! I think you have more of a risk if you're using your cell phone right next to your child's head while nursing, but most people seem okay with that.

I could hear him just fine as we lived in an apartment all on one floor. If we had been in a two story house, I would have gotten a sound only monitor.

I thought about the radiation but I didn't come up with any research that I could understand. We have WiFi throughout the house, cell phones while nursing, and power lines - what's one more thing? I don't know. That being said, after two months we stopped using the monitor. Our LO is a screamer. There's no question about whether she's awake or not.

If I didn't have our monitor, I wouldn't have known that DS was throwing up in his sleep while laying on his back when he had the stomach bug. The benefits far outweigh the risk of radiation in my opinion. I would never be without a monitor.

is it because it's wireless? if that's the case, you probably have a whole lot of other electronics you should be concerned with, too. So...nope, it wasn't a concern for me.

I think having the video monitor outweighs the risk. I would much rather be able to see that my baby is ok, breathing, nothing over her face etc as well as get some sleep knowing I can see her. Honestly, I've never even thought about the whole radiation thing...guess it's just not one of my concerns.

Agree with PP, there are so many things to worry about in the world, this was not one I gave thought too. the benefit outweighted the risk in my mind. I like to be able to see LO, and having a video monitor prevented me from getting up several times in the middle of the night, I could look over and see she was breathing & go back to sleep.

I was totally set on (and have even registered for) a digital wireless video monitor. When I told DH he was pretty hesitant due to radiation exposure (something I didn't even know was an issue) so we decided to do some more research. I've only just started to research but it does seem that there is quite a bit of controversy about the peace of mind monitors provide vs. radiation exposure. I'm sure I'll be the stereotypical paranoid, first time parent so I want *some* sort of monitoring, but now I'm worried. Ack!

Did you have any hesitation and if so, what made you sway one way or another? I know low frequency analog monitors are an option (something like 49 mHz) but I wonder if their high enough quality?

Halp.
