@smocks: I also had my last Mirena perforate my uterus and had to have surgery. It cost me over $1500 and a week off work (shortly after returning to work from maternity leave). Most people don't have problems. But when it goes bad, it's awful. My first Mirena was awesome.

I'm on the pill now and it's not been easy to remember to take at all. So I'm going to have to back to the drawing board I guess. We are using condoms every time as well so I feel OK about not being 100% consistent with the pill. I feel like if DH gets sick of condoms, he can have a vasectomy.

Maybe I should answer the rest of the question, lol. I took the mini pill while I was BFing, and then switched to regular pill once I stopped. I'd say when we're certain we're done, DH will be getting a vasectomy.

like @woodentulip I had to have surgery to have my Mirena removed. Mine wasn't due to an ectopic pregnancy though, mine perforated my uterus shortly after insertion and was floating in my abdomen.

It's uncommon, but I don't think it's as uncommon as they advertise.

I don't really have experience with this yet, but I have a plan! I'm 39w with my first, and after some research, I plan to get the Paragard copper iud. It doesn't have hormones like other iuds and bc pills, which was a huge selling point for me. My cycle was so messed up for a long time after going off the pill to ttc and I don't want to go through that again when we're ready for a second.

We went with a vasectomy after LO2 (which was a surprise pregnancy). I considered the Mirena but was concerned about an effect on breastfeeding. (I got pregant when LO1 was 6 months old and I seemed to have an immediate drop in supply. My midwife said that the Mirena was generally fine with breastfeeding, but given my history I might have a problem. And I didn't want to get a very expensive device inserted and then immediately remove it. Or be stressed about the possibility of supply dropping.)

@erinbaderin: A midwife/OB practice delivered my first, and they never brought up birth control, even 6 weeks postpartum! We actually never used protection between the two pregnancies!

I'm now at a strictly OB practice that is much less crunchy (since I'm high risk due to a previa), and I'm curious if they will bring it up in the next couple of appointments. But we are 100% sure we only want 2, so I don't want to take my chances and not use protection!

@Alba4: it's weird but with my first, they asked me about birth control a few weeks before my due date, in the hospital after she was born, and again at my follow ups. In the hospital I remember being like- nothing is ever going in there again, don't worry! After my second they were a little more relaxed about it.

I did condoms between babies, got mirena after our second (and probably last). It's ok so far. I've had spotting for three months now which is very annoying but no more annoying than taking a pill. Having trouble losing weight but I was before I got it in and that's probably more due to stress eating and not exercising than birth control. Same for libido- I have none but that's because I have two small children, no sleep, and a baby that sleeps at the foot of our bed. And breastfeeding. I didn't get it back for a full year after my first. :bummed:

@Alba4: I had a c section and the surgeon asked me like three times if I wanted her to tie my tubes while she was in there, and then at my 6 week appointment my midwife asked me if I had thought about birth control, suggested mirena, and told me to talk to my regular doctor about it.

I tried the pill again, and found it to be intensely hard for me (like, I felt like it was making me crazier than I already am). I opted for Mirena, and liked it until I ended up in emergency with a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. I know that my experience is very rare, and know that I am not sharing it to scare you! But it wasn't something that I had even thought about, and not getting my period, I had no idea that it was happening. Anyhow, I did lose a tube, but all is well and we are done with kids anyhow, but I have decided not to use it again!

After my LO arrives, I'm thinking I'll either get an IUD or we'll just use condoms until my DH schedules his vasectomy. Did your doctor talk to you about options? I'm 31 weeks and they haven't brought anything up yet. Maybe they will discuss with me at my 6 week postpartum appointment?

I took the mini pill for 2 years between LO1 and LO2. I hated it, it made me depressed and I had really low libido, neither of which I attributed to the pill until after I was off of it. Never again. I now have the copper IUD. I like it but it does make my periods longer and heavier and it took 6+ months for my cycle to be more manageable. I've never had weight gain issues with any BC methods (I took a number of different BCPs for 10 years prior to having kids).

Another Mirena lover! It is amazing not having to worry about BC on a daily basis. Also, this doesn't super sound like it might apply to you, but I really like personally that it's something I will have to actually go get removed because I think it will make the decision to TTC #2 a slightly more rational and thought out one :silly:

I have the Mirena IUD and really like it.

With the mini pill you need to take the pill at the exact same time everyday, there are a lot of unplanned pregnancies on it because of the high error rate. Not a risk I'm willing to take at this point!

Due to my age & time to conceive DD, I didn't really want any BC either, but ended up taking the mini pill in order to appease my optimistic DH. It hasn't seemed to affect my supply or weight. I also prefer it because it's easy to stop & when getting off the regular pill, I got my cycle like clockwork, so if/when we want to TTC again we can dive right in, I hope.

I'm on Lo Loestrin FE. I have to be on it to regulate my hormones before I start trying again. So far, I'm liking it - I tried depo and Yaz a long time ago and I didn't have a problem with Yaz but I HATED depo.

It's kind of a pain to take it every day though. And maybe I just need to wait longer (it's been a month) but I feel ragey and hormonal often now. But otherwise, no awful side effects.

I had Mirena after my first and had no weight gain issues. I was actually able to lose about 25lbs following an easy diet exercise plan while I had it. It may have had an impact on libido, but life after #1 was pretty stressful for a few years, so who knows. I LOVED not having to worry about birth control and having no periods.

I just had a Skyla inserted two weeks ago. It's very similar to Mirena but only lasts 3 years. DH is on the clock to get a vasectomy now.

There are definitely pills that are BF-friendly. I've had 2 Mirenas and no real issues with either. I asked my OB about weight gain (and also about tougher weight loss with Mirena) and she said she really has never seen an instance where the weight gain can't easily be attributed to something else - - which doesn't mean it doesn't happen, but an IUD is also an easy scapegoat. I weigh less now than I did when I got married 5 years ago, so personally I don't think it impacted my ability to lose weight post-bebe.

I have Mirena and love it! It hasn't impacted my libido and since the hormone is secreted directly into your uterus very little gets into your blood stream, which means it has less of a chance of impacting you the way the pill typically does.
