I've gotta get onto weaning my daughter off the bottle. She's 2.5 and has one small bottle of milk at bedtime or else will not sleep and freaks out. Not sure the best way to go around it, its so much part of her bedtime routine. I've tried a few different sippy cups with milk but its so far ended up in tears :/

Agreed. When we stopped the bottle, we just made sure he had water or milk available after dinner to ensure he wasn't thirsty... but we changed our bedtime routine to eliminate any sort of drink. So it was brush teeth, books, song, straight to bed. He did great. But then again, we did it at 13 months, so he wasn't able to ask for anything yet. :)

Would he notice if you just don't give it to him? We used to give a bottle before the bedtime routine, but he was either full from dinner or it put him to sleep, so we just stopped giving it to him and he never noticed. But he was a lot younger, which might make a difference.

I agree with pp's in cutting the bedtime bottle completely. We did this too, and now we give him a straw cup (or bottle if that's what he loves) an hour - half hour before bed. We brush teeth and that's it.

We stopped her bedtime bottle cold turkey on her 2nd birthday.

She had a few bottles during the first year since I nursed, but once she turned 1 and drank cows milk, she got MORE bottles than before. We eventually got her to drink milk from a straw cup, but still kept the bedtime warm bottle. The night we stopped, she asked for it once, but didn't freak out. The next night, she asked again, but that was it.

@Ra: I've actually heard milk before bed is the worst time to give it due to the sugar content/teeth. We had to quit the bottle cold turkey, it was a rough week but she moved on (and she is stubborn.) We would give her a sippy of water at bedtime and most of the time she threw it out of the crib, but she had a drink if she needed it and she finally realized "bottles were all gone" and she moved on. Make sure to remove the site of bottles, she found on in a cupboard and that was a disaster, so I had to hid them in our closet! ha

E would only take the NUK sippies for awhile, because they have silicone tips and are easier to drink from. (Sippies are ridiculously hard to get anything from!) If it is a comfort thing, I can see how he'd hate to have to work for it.

When my sister was little, she had a three bears blanket lovey. My mother told her that "mama bear needed the bottle for baby bear". Then she dealt with the nighttime screaming fallout of my sister being afraid that the "bears were going to get her too" . At least she never asked about the bottle, lol!

I did it at a younger age but went cold turkey to a sippy. He took less for a few days but then it was fine. What about having water in the bottle and milk in a sippy? Let him choose between them and see what happens?

@Ra: we give a sippy of milk after dinner, while we cuddle and watch Mickey. We don't give it with dinner cause she won't eat as much. But then it comes in handy when she doesn't eat so it fills her up.

We just had to do it cold turkey. We did it around 19 months as well. I found that he preferred a soft spout sippy and we ended up having to poke a couple extra holes in it because the flow was so slow. After a couple days of realizing he wasn't getting his bottle back, he started drinking from the sippy. We still do warm sippy of milk before bed although it's more of an after dinner thing. He's a little over 2.

My toddler was obsessed with her baba for a long time...we only had 1 nipple top thingy left and it was becoming torn. I kept telling her once it broke, we would have to throw it out and she would need to drink from a big girl cup. One day it tore all the way so we had her throw it in the trash. She kept asking for it for a few days it we said it broke and she needed to use a big girl cup. After that she just forgot about it. Not sure if you could try something similar??

My 19-month-old still takes a bedtime bottle. Our pedi is pushing pretty hardcore for us to wean him. We tried to give him a sippy tonight instead and he freaked. the. eff. out. We then tried to warm his milk and give it to him in his sippy and he still freaked out. He became hysterical anytime we got the cup anywhere near his face and kept asking for his baba. It was heartbreaking...and we gave in.

Any tips for winning a toddler who is super attached to his bottle?
