I think whatever you're comfortable with is good. I hated the pump and had no issue with him getting all his nursing done when I was home and he would get offered cow's milk and not drink it. Like you, I never even though much about continuing BFing past 6 months, besides the cost-benefit! But we're at 6 months now, and more and more, I'm thinking of continuing BFing beyond a year (or more likely, pumping to supply milk instead of providing cow's milk). I definitely ant to partially wean as I feel like I"m forcing some of our sessions now...I would gladly keep at least the morning and night session. I'll talk to our pedi about it at our 1 yr appt but I'm guessing you just give cow's milk the rest of the day and they nurse whichever sessions you decide to keep? I'd just continue on with what ever you're still doing, however it makes you happy. If you want to reduce frequency or duration, then work on that. But basically just go on as makes you and your baby happy. </p> <p>My daughter was nursing for a big percentage of her diet until about 20 months. That worked for me. So if you're still nursing a lot, I'd not worry terribly about how much food your child is eating. We will TTC in 2014, so I'd like to be done by Christmas. Doctor says a baby needs 16 oz of milk at 1 year, so I am estimating he needs to get 1 sippy of milk a day, and he nurses for the rest. Eventually I'll drop morning once he gets more interested in the cup. Right now he is not interested in nursing or a cup! It is a struggle to get liquid into him! We did gradually wean to once a day when I was pregnant then went back up to twice after baby was born. While a lot of the nutrional value is similar between the two, humans are unique in their decorated oligosaccharides (links of several sugars together with interesting side chains of useful chemicals). Formula cannot reproduce them either. My son couldn't have cow's milk. Based on my experiences, I'm not sure why babies need cow's milk. So, breastfeeding should take the place of liquid calories. So you can keep going the way you have (we nursed 5-6 times a day/night still) or you can replace some of the nursing with cow's milk. I don't know much about it though. What does it mean? If LO is getting his nutrition from food (and whole cow's milk), where does the breastfeeding fit in? </p> <p>What did you do - nurse first thing in the morning and before bed only? To be honest, the main reason I'm thinking about continuing is to keep giving LO the immune system advantages through the winter months... LO turns 1 at the end of October. Please help me figure out what to do. </p>
