I got pregnant when my LO was 12 months old and weaned her by 14 months. She was well into eating solids at this point however, loved to nurse and was nursing for longer and longer periods of time (30+ minutes!). My supply wasn't affected and I don't think the taste changes until the second trimester when you begin to produce colostrum. I had to wean two months into my current pregnancy because I was SO nauseas, fatigued and miserable. The long nursing sessions were killing me. However I would have continued had my symptoms not been so bad. LO never seemed to notice any change in taste and the process wasn't bad. Looking back I miss nursing my baby girl but I'm also glad I have this time to have my body back for a rest before nursing full time again.

THANK YOU all! Breastfeeding is a huge priority for me so I think we will start preventing until LO1 has weaned. You are all awesome!

@mrsjyw: @Truth Bombs: what I meant when I said it would have been impossible is that I didn't ovulate until shortly before I got my period at 18-19 months pp. so yes, I did not know when the first first time I ovulated was, I know now looking back that there is no way t would have happened before a year, if that makes sense. But I had no way to know at the time so we prevented.

I got pregnant when my daughter was 8 months old (I had not seen a period yet and we were ntnp). I continued to breastfeed until she was 1 year but it really took a toll on my body. I developed some low blood pressure issues and passed out a few times. Doctor didn't blame it on breastfeeding but said it certainly didn't help. After I weaned it got better but didn't go away.

We wanted our babies close in age. At 7 months pp, I hadn't gotten a cycle back so I started dropping breastfeeding sessions and got my cycle back at 8 months pp. I got pregnant at 9 months pp. I was able to continue to breastfeed until b turned 1. At that point I went back to work and stopped breast feeding. I stopped because 1) I was feeding her 2-3 times a day and I couldn't continue the times while working. 2) I was extremely tired and the dr suggested to stop breastfeeding to help gain some energy and 3) so I could have my body to myself for a few months before #2 came. I don't remember having supply issues while feeding and being pregnant. Good luck!

@mrsjyw: Yes you will ovulate once before you get your period back (which is why it's best to prevent even if you don't have your cycle back). But you aren't regularly ovulating without getting a period.

My period was back early despite breastfeeding and I got pregnant at 7 months PP. I was able to BF for two more months before I dried up completely.
My friend never got her period and she got pregnant at 5 months PP. She nursed her LO for the first 6 months of her second pregnancy and was still able to pump a lot!

@Truth Bombs: you can definitely get pregnant even while ebf and without a period.

I ebf'ed but AF returned at 4.5 months pp. my supply took a hit then and every month during af time. We made it to 13 months but I'm sure if I had gotten pregnant that year I would've dried up quickly due to pregnancy.

I got pregnant at four months pp and have had supply issues. I BFed my first for 15 with no issues. We've had to start solids early with my second. So far I'm still doing ok BFing, but she is eating way more solids than most babies her age (6.5 months).
This pregnancy was unexpected and I would have wanted to wait longer to ensure I could BF my second for a full year.

We decided to start trying when LO#1 was 8 months, and I hadn't had a period at that point. I got OPKs and did them every day, and didn't ovulate until she was 12 months. We got pregnant on that cycle.

She was still bfing at the time I got pregnant, and she bfed A LOT. I had no supply issues whatsoever, and she didn't slow down at all either so that is totally possible. It was very difficult, however, to continue bfing through pregnancy. It is HARD to bf through nipple sensitivity, sickness, feeling like you don't want to be touched, hormones, etc. And then, after bfing through the whole pregnancy, I was tandem nursing and had a newborn and a toddler who wanted to nurse all the time, which is also very difficult. When we do this again, I am planning on waiting until my LO has weaned.

This would not have been possible for me. I didn't get my period until he was 9 months, and I didn't get pregnant until he was a year. I continued breastfeeding until he was 14.5 months, at which point it became painful for me, so we weaned.

@coopsmama: that's definitely something to think about. I would really like to breastfeed for a year, exclusively until at least 6 months. Thanks!!!

@Happygal: exciting!!! Best of luck to you:)

@Foodnerd81: neither my mom nor my sister breastfed unfortunately. Both had emergency c sections with lots of complications and it just didn't work out for them (while I had a totally routine pregnancy and complication-free vaginal birth)

@Adira: thanks for sharing! I am thinking we will end up using protection until we ttc next summer- I will hopefully have a fairly regular cycle by then!

@blackbird: at this point i'm on the fence if this summer/fall or next summer would be better to conceive based on our plans (if only everyone were so lucky to be able to plan conception- yeah right!). at this point if it happens, it happens, if it doesn't- oh well!

I didn't get my period back when I was EBF until 9.5 months. And even then, my LP was too short and I wasn't able to get pregnant until we had weaned down to nursing once a day.

Like @Truth Bombs: this would have been impossible for me- though there was no way to know it at the time. I didn't get my period back until she dropped down to only nursing at bedtime, which was about 18 months in our case. We did not want our LOs so closely spaced so we actively prevented during that time just in case, which I now know wouldn't have made a difference.

I did get pregnant while she was still nursing once a day and she dropped it completely a week after I conceived, but she was showing all the signs of being ready to wean anyway so I'll never know if it was related (nor do I really care since it was a good time for weaning for us).

I don't exactly fit your description, but I got pregnant while breastfeeding my 17 month old toddler. My periods didn't come back until he was almost a year, and they were very wonky until I got pregnant. My first cycle was two months long and the second was a month and a half. I had always been someone who could predict my period by looking at a calendar, so it was frustrating not knowing when my next period was coming or when I was ovulating. After I got pregnant, my milk slowly dried up to where I wasn't producing anything, so I decided to wean my son. I wasn't really interested in nursing all through my pregnancy anyway, and that made it super easy to wean him without any discomfort on my end.

I got pregnant while EBF when my son was 4 months old. A month later my supply had decreased significantly and we were having to supplement with formula after every feed as he became really fussy/upset and wasn't gaining. I lost my supply entirely by the time he was 7 months old.

Quite honestly, the pregnancy was really hard because of that and in my case screwed up my breastfeeding relationship to the point that I would never purposely have a closely spaced pregnancy like that. So just be sure you're okay with the possibility nursing may not work out!

Following along b/c we're in the same boat! My daughter is 5.5 months and we're ready to TTC. We did infertility treatments to get pregnant, so I'm not sure how much help we'll need this time. My LO has just started solids, but I wouldn't say it's reduced the frequency of breast feeding at this point.

After combing through old threads, I thought I would see if there were any new mamas out there who got pregnant while breastfeeding and continued to do so!

My LO is just over 4 months old and is EBF. I haven't gotten a period yet, and DH and I are not trying (because no cycle) but not preventing. I know it's unlikely, but I am holding out hope I will get pregnant by/around falltime (if it doesn't happen- we will use protection until next summer).

Has anyone gotten pregnant when your EBF little one was around 6 months? We will start solids end of summer/ early fall so I am not sure if that affects timing. What is the likelihood of this happening?

Also- anyone continued breastfeeding a young LO (6-12 months) while pregnant? I know that pregnancy affects supply & taste but I would love to continue breastfeeding if I do get pregnant (if LO would still like to).

Any stories/ advice?!?
