LO is allergic to egg and broke out into hives and her mouth and eyes got swollen when after touching the egg and touching her face. Doctor confirmed it with a blood test at her 1-year appointment, though we were already seeing a GI specialist for milk and soy allergies.

I also believe allergies can appear and disappear but it would depend on the reaction for me to try to reintroduce the item in question. My DD broke out in hives all over about 30 minutes after eating mashed up avocados at 6 months old. It was scary to see her skin break out in hives so fast! She would kick her legs up and down from the itch because she couldn't scratch yet. I gave her Benadryl and it calmed down pretty fast. She's 19 months now and I have not attempted to feed her avocados again. I am scared of the same reaction. I might try an avocado smoothie pretty soon to test the waters and have Benadryl ready just in case. My DD use to get small red spots near her mouth area after eating spinach but since it was contained to that area only, I chose to let her keep eating spinach. Now she doesn't break out at all.

I personally (with no scientific backing) experience that allergies can appear and disappear. I believe (like a pp) that when my kid is reacting he will react to anything even if it isn't a true allergy. Hindsight being what it is, my niece had MSPI that was never diagnosed. At 2 she was diagnosed with peanut, milk and egg allergy which she grew out of after a year of not having it. My son had MSPI and is still intolerant to soy. His first allergy test at 18 months he had positives for soy, cashews and oats. At 3 he tested for chicken only. At 3.5 with a blood test he was positive for soy, peanuts and sesame seeds. He had been eating peanuts for 6 months with no issues.

I would avoid avocado for now and ask your pediatrician for a referral to an allergist asap, so that you can at least get the ball rolling. We have also dealt with MSPI, plus possibly true allergies to eggs and something unknown (maybe kiwi, weirdly). When we tried to make an appointment with the allergist, they didn't have any openings for 3 months! But at least in the meanwhile, our pedi prescribed an epi pen for LO in case she should react to anything else. Right now, we are just avoiding the things we suspect until she can get tested.

I would agree with you and see if you can discuss with your pediatrician about allergies. For me, my LO had very sensitive skin and had a some hives/flare ups, but I suppose it wasn't severe enough that our pedi recommended we start allergy testing at 1 and I agreed with her. We just kept her in footed pajamas a lot, so her skin was protected. At 1 we had an allergy appointment, blood draw and skin test, and found out she was allergic to egg, but also just had very sensitive skin.

@Mae: We saw a GI yesterday who told us that LO's sudden reactions to everything (despite having had them before) could be due to his current milk allergy flareup. She wants us to reintroduce solids as things calm down. He was really doing so well before the flareup that he was doing BLW and enjoying it; then he had a tiny amount of dairy and it all fell apart. Is it possible that her system is having a flareup?

@Mrs. Jacks: interesting. sounds like I should really talk to our ped about it and see what she thinks. considering the mildness of her reaction seems like maybe we should stay cautious and wait on testing, if it may not be very reliable anyways. And yes-- Fia is totally not into foo right now. Which sucks since she is also so hard to bottle feed and I'd count down the days until she was on all solids if I knew when that would be! But I think we're doing a good job of not pushing it and being chill about the fact that she is still really young and she probably won't go to college still on bottles... lol

@Mae: We are reluctant because allergy testing in children under one is notoriously unreliable and difficult to interpret. What do you do with a positive to almonds when the child eats them already? You ignore it, but it's hard to do. How about positive scratch but negative cap rast? Vice versa?

Kids under one have all kinds of intolerances that they eventually are able to deal with. Our daughter had MSPI with sesame, soy, egg, and nut for good measure. I was a starving mama to be sure! She refused almost all solids until the age of one. I remember very distinctly taking her to dinner one night and 9 months and celebrating that she are four grains of rice. I lived by the mantra "under one, food just for fun". It was really hard though!

@Mrs. Jacks: that is so scary! do you know why some doctors are apparently reluctant to do allergy testing on infants?

@Fronkinzankinsbride: thanks, it is scary! I think what makes it (extra) hard is that I have really horrible skin and am allergic to anything fragranced and also just tend to break out at the slightest thing. LO seems to have similar skin (very prone to dry patches, drool rashes, diaper rash if we put her in disposables, etc) and so I'm never quite sure what is normal skin sucky-ness v. allergy skin issue. Like she had another rash a few days ago and we hadn't fed her any solids that day. But it was a different sort of rash and seemed more like a dry skin irritation thing to me than an allergy thing. but who knows?! Especially if we'd given her food that day.

@singingbee: thanks. who would've thought feeding my kid would be so damn hard??

@matador84: thanks! She has had apples and pears and squash already. liked the apples and pears okay... squash not so much. we've actually given her a pretty decent variety so far and unfortunately avocado seemed to be her fav!

Ugh so sorry! Our ped won't refer out for allergy testing until the age of 2. Not sure the reason why...

Anyway, when I thought I was dealing with allergies for DS they suggested I start with apples, pears and squash because of low likelihood of a reaction. They also suggested keeping Benadryl on hand in case of a reaction. Good luck!

There are a number of foods that contain histamine like properties that can cause rashes or hives, but aren't actual allergies. I suspect that if your LO has eaten avocado with no issue, she's probably not allergic, but I would definitely mention the rash to your pediatrician and get referred to an allergic.

When lo had croup, we thought it might a reaction to avocado because she had that for the first time that night. When googling I found that an allergy to avocado is also linked to one with bananas.

I hate that y'all have to go through this in addition to everything else.

I know several people who are allergic to avocado so I think it's more common an allergy than I ever realized. My wife still develops new allergies to things all the time so it doesn't seem unusual to me for a baby to develop a new reaction to something she's eaten before. What a nerve wracking process. Sorry you're dealing with this! If it were myself, (and I anticipate going through this in the future) I would introduce slowly and be cautious and on the look out for even mild reactions. Continue to keep good track of what she's eaten so you can eliminate things easily. And like you said, avoid related foods. But getting an opinion from a doctor can't hurt of course. Hopefully she grows out of the allergies. Good luck!

We went to the allergist at eight months due to hives. That's early to go, but it was from just opening a bag of cashews in the car with our daughter in the backseat.

Her allergy is severe and life threatening, so I'm glad we found out early. Just getting the pin prick in her back led to severe facial swelling. She's had two severe reactions since then. We also discovered that she's extremely cross reactive with pistachio, which we wouldn't have otherwise known.

We got a referral from our pediatrician and she sent us to the allergist.

LO is 7.5 mo and is MSPI. We started solids about 2 months ago and have been moving very slowly, basically just with fruits and veggies. No packaged stuff or baby food or pre made purees (we are doing BLW). LO isn't really into eating yet so she doesn't consume much when she does it.

But now I think we may be dealing with some allergies and it bums me out. And I'm not quite sure how to proceed. When we first started solids I gave LO some sweet potato and she spit up a TON all day. No rash or anything though. Doc said to wait a while to give it again, probably just a sensitivity.

Other than that we saw no issues with anything we had given her though-- and the first thing we actually gave her was avocado which she has had probably 5-8 times now. 2 weeks ago we fed it to her and she got a rash later that day, but didn't seem otherwise upset or have other symptoms (I posted about it here: http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/my-first-dr-hellobee-post-rash). Because she'd eaten avocado so many times before we thought it couldn't be that and chalked it up to my MIL using a scented hand cream before handling her. But we hadn't fed her avocado since.

Today we had one in the house so just to see what would happen I put a tiny bit on my finger and rubbed it on her neck. A few hours later a rash appeared right where it had been.

So.. that is an allergy right? I mean it is weird she ate it with no issues for like 6 weeks then all of a sudden developed an allergy-- but not impossible?

Where do we go from here? Should I make an appt with her ped to talk to her about it and make a plan for how to proceed with solids? Or avoid other related(??) foods?

Any advice would be appreciated :)
