@caterw: Yes, agreed, that's a valid concern, that you want to at least cover the cost of daycare, but I think you might find yourself in a position where for some time, you might be upside down on that. As long as it is for the short term, I might be willing to take that risk as long as I had some time to build up savings before making the transition and there was a potential to make more with more experience.

@looch: I was managing a grocery store in my last job and I have 5 years of restaurant management experience as well from when I was in college. I guess thinking about it, I do have experience in lots of HR type things (hiring, recruitment, developing training programs), financial operations, budgets, managing a large team, etc.

My concern is actually finding a job that will cover the cost of daycare. I would obviously love to find a job that I love, but my main concern is just generally getting back into the workforce!

Without knowing what you did for those 6 months, I am just going to put this out there...what if you applied for an administrative assistant type role, so you can learn about the various industries that are out there? It would be a paycheck and would also give you insight into the day to day before actually committing to a program.

If I were going to change industries now though, I'd look into be a physician's assistant, so I would be trying to get at least a part time job in a doc's office to see if I really liked it.

I agree I think its a good start to a conversation. I would suggest setting some small goals.

1 month goal - each lay out plans and research what your individual goals are.

3-6 month goal - discuss goals and come up with a timeline.

1 year goal - Maybe take the first steps

by year 2-3 maybe you are both happy with new careers.

@gingerbebe: that does make me feel a LOT better actually. I know my DH is not super happy in his current job so maybe this is his way of asking for help getting outnof the industry. Maybe I could look into some part time programs for both of us and have another conversation about it where I am more calm.

I wouldn't freak out too much, he could just be starting a conversation about career plans in general.

I would suggest a 1 year plan on how to both develop your careers. Initially, it could be as small as accountability meetings once a week to check in about research you have done on programs, meeting with practitioners in the field, and then perhaps both of you can take online classes or local adult ed classes in areas of interest. Once you solidify a direction or field, I would then make a 2-3 year plan to get yourselves in that field.

I think having concrete forward progression for both of you would help you feel less panic and help your husband feel less stuck or burned out in his current job.

My husband took on an executive MBA program that started a few months after DS1 was born and finished right after DS2 was born and it was a tough period of being spread thin, but we were okay because we had planned for it leading up to it and had an end goal in mind and got through it through gritted teeth. I'm about to return to work part time after my maternity leave with DS2, but we still check in all the time about our career plans, discuss crazy left field ideas, and whether they make sense.

He wants to get a technical training of some kind (think car mechanic, plumber etc) but he isn't totally sure yet. He is currently a restaurant manager. I think he has not thought this out one bit other than the "I want to go back to school" part honestly. I think the earning potential for him would be about the same or possibly higher if he is able to open his own business.

I don't think this plan is super realistic in the short term. It just triggered a sort of panic for me about what MY job prospects will look like when I return to the work force after a long time out and with no job experience outside of a field I no longer wish to work on.

My first thought is that it is nice for your husband to have wants, but it should be a joint discussion. What degree does GE plan to pursue. What are the costs and expected job possibilities. Why now (as opposed to in 5 years)? Can he do a very part time option via online courses to start?

Soooo tonight over dinner my husband mentioned that he would like to reduce his work hours to part time, go back to school, and have me return to work full time! I was totally shocked- I have been a SAHM for 3 years and we currently have a 5 month old and a 3.5 year old. My last job was for only 6 months when DD1 was a baby. I was miserable being away from her, and we decided to move for DH to get a better paying job that would allow me to stay home. Prior to that, I had just graduated from college with a degree in political science and also have a background in retail/ restaurant management (how I supported myself through school).

I am super concerned about returning to work due to the high cost of daycare in my area and my only real job experience is in restaurants/ retail. I don't really want to do that again since DH works nights and at least one of us needs to be home with our kids. Our original plan when I transitioned to being a SAHM was that I would go back to work part time when dd2 is able to go to preschool, and then move to full time when both kids are in regular school.
