After we did the Robeez (crib like shoe) we went to the see akin run line which was very bendable but a bit more support for outside play.

We use the Smaller by See Kai Run. She is walking now but still in those since the soft soled are the best for beginning to walk. Once she starts falling less we will get hard soled.

@cyan: nope, our robeeze were perfectly fine at the playgroun, on the grass, etc. The only issue we ran into was that they soaked through when the ground was wet, which is what made us get hard soled shoes, as it was fall and more likely to be wet at the playground. If it had been summer, this probably wouldn't have been an issue!

We used Stride Rites with the flexible soles because those were the hands me downs we got. I definitely plan on starting shoes around then again with #2, we had a small war on our hands initially with #1 because he didn't wear shoes until walking and didn't like how they felt.

@cyan: My plan is to put her in the see kai run smaller shoes when it warms up and she wants to practice outside. they are still very soft and flexible, but have a sole.

ETA: she has these: http://www.seekairun.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=CHARLOTTEF13GRAY in a size 9-12m, which is still a bit big for her now, but hopefully she'll grow into it before spring. SKR pops up on deal sites like zulilly a lot, and they often have sales. I think I got her these (and a couple other pairs in larger sizes) for maybe 17.00 during a sale.

Thanks, all! Did any of you have issues with soft-sole and outside walking? Did it destroy the shoe? I am all about bare feet inside, but I am a bit concerned that once we get outside, I am going to spend 30-some dollars on shoes that will be destroyed by the sidewalk, mud, etc...

@cyan: I haven't found that to be true, and like others have said its a soft leather so they kind of form to fit. My daughter is in a 6-12 month pair, and they fit her fine at 10 months. She has another pair that are more of a moccasin shape, and those are a bit big still.

DD used stride rite "cruise & walk" shoes. The sole was soft (but not crib shoes soft), bendable, had ridges that prevented her from slipping. It was honestly the only shoes that helped her walk

I woudl definitely do robeez. They should fit snugly around the ankle so they don't fall off, but I never found the shoe itself to be narrow. I would keep your LO in soft soled shoes as long as possible--we only switched to harder soles because it was getting cold and wet outside.

Robeez are great. My LO had fat feet as a baby and they fit just fine since the leather is supple.

We use robeeze, but only for warmth when we are out and about. I think its best for them to learn to walk barefoot. Soft soled shoes (like robeeze) imitate that when they can't be barefoot. They can be slippery though, so we try to just let her practice in socks with grippys.
We also have some see kai run, but they are firmer and I'm not comfortable putting them on her until she's more stable.

This is probably a total first-time mom question... but does my baby need shoes? (lol, I feel silly even typing that).

LO is 8 months old and beginning to walk assisted. I don't think it will be too much longer before she is a legitimate walker. Until now, she has pretty much worn just socks or bare feet if the weather is really warm. My main concern is now that the weather is getting nicer, we will be spending more time outside, and she will likely want to be down and cruising.

So... I am guessing she needs shoes, because it isn't warm enough for bare feet. But does she need a soft-sole or hard-sole? Soft-sole is better for beginners, right? But it just seems like those would get so wet and dirty....

So.... What did you do for your beginning walker, specifically for outside play?
