@heartonastring: if the problem is the transfer I would unlatch her before she falls asleep! We did pick up put down nap training after we did nights around 5.5 months. It was a positive experience and worked great.

@heartonastring: do you think she's about to do something developmental? Lots of stuff starts to happen at 5-6 months (teeth, rolling etc) which can screw up sleep.

Otherwise I have no advice, 5-6 months is when I started nursing to sleep full time!

So I gave up after an hour. I know that totally defeats the whole purpose of sleep training, but she was so wide awake that it seemed futile.

Thankfully my mum just got here to stay until Sunday as DH is away. She can deal with DD while I go get a haircut this afternoon!

@heartonastring: C is only half that age but we have the same issue. It takes as ling to get her to sleep as the whole length of her nap sometimes- it's seriously draining. At 8 weeks she is too young for any sleep training so I'm just dealing. I feel your pain.

@heartonastring: We nap trained and sleep trained at the same time about 2 months ago and it's still hit-or-miss some days.
Most of the time right now for naps she yells for about 5 minutes, and then squirms/snuggles in for another 10 before taking a 1-1.5 hr nap (prior to nap/sleep training it was 20-40 min max).
Still as recently as last weekend she yelled for a good 30-45 minutes before falling asleep for a (2 hour!) nap.

@heartonastring: babies are weird. Hugs Mom!! it is so hard. It can take 3 days of CIO for them to get it.

Ugh. Second nap of the day today so far = DISASTER. When I tried to take her off the boob she 100% FULLY woke up and would not go back to drowsy, so put her down fully awake and she's up there screaming.

I don't know why some days are fine (yesterday she took three naps no problem and then slept 11 hours straight through the night) and now today she will not let me leave the room without FREAKING out.

UGH! I am SO frustrated!

No judgment at all!!

Honestly, day care helped a lot for us. It got her use to napping by herself instead of on me or in the car. We finally got her napping in her crib over time, sleep sack and white noise. Then we were out so much over weekends, she got use to napping in the car or in the Ktan. So we had to CIO to retrain her.

She has been doing great since then. We do make sure one nap a day is in the crib. We also send a sleep sack to day care and have a white noise machine there as well. Girlfriend, gets some special treatment!

30 mins is good. The first time during retraining was over an hour and 15 mins (with some breaks of just sitting in the crib), and then she slept for 2.5 hours, which she had never done for us. Then the next nap was only maybe 10 or 15 mins of crying. Some days she doesn't cry at all and goes right to sleep but sometimes she still cries but it isn't very long.

We did sleep training for night first at around 4.5 months. We also used extinction. The first few nights were very rough...especially on me, but he learned how to self soothe. We kept rocking for naps and we should have just done it all at once.

Finally, around 10 months, we were exhausted with rocking him for a nap and needed to start getting him to go down for a nap on his own too. That was rougher b/c he could stand up in his crib and was jumping for quite a while. After a week of this, he got incredibly better. We can now put him down for his 1 nap of the day in the afternoon and at night with just a kiss...fully awake and he'll put himself to sleep.

The best thing to do is create a solid routine that doesn't include nursing to sleep. Nighttime, we did bath, bottle, read, kiss, glowworm and put him down. We started repeating that for naps but excluded the bath and bottle since he didn't get those before a nap. Once he got familiar with the same routine, he started associating it with sleep.

Lots of luck. CIO isn't for everyone, but if you decide to do it and when you commit to it and keep at it every day, it gets a little easier every day.

We nap-trained at 3.5 months with full extinction. And I did everything you described! And it worked! :)

It was hard...Nap-training took a long time but when it was so worth it in the end.

DD had always been a good napper, reliably napping for 1.5-2 hours morning and afternoon, with a 20-30 minute catnap late in the afternoon as well. I used to be able to put her down drowsy but awake and she'd put herself to sleep (she still does this at night with virtually no problems). For the last couple weeks though it has been incredibly hit or miss and I feel like it's dragging me to the brink of insanity.

Shes 5 months old and she's teething...but no sign of the tooth actually cutting through anytime soon :( She has no issues going down at night though, only for naps.

We have a pretty solid routine: diaper change, walk around for a couple minutes while I rub her back, then go into the nursery, white noise, swaddle and nurse while rocking. I almost never have any issue getting her to sleep, it's getting her off the boob/putting her down that's the issue. She wakes up and starts crying. Today, for pretty much the first time ever, I left her to CIO. It took just over 30 minutes for her to fall asleep. I did full extinction because experience tells me that if I go back in the room we're done for.

We've never sleep trained before because we haven't needed to, so I don't know if I'm doing this properly.

Did you nap train? At what age? How? Did it work?

Please no judgment.
