1. My ped said 24-32 oz/day is normal range for formula babies but really as long as lo is happy just do what she wants. My 5mo does and has since the switch taken anywhere from 19-30oz/day. Her average is 23-24, but she's never been a big eater.

2. Pay oop and it sucks.

3. Amazon seems cheapest but sometimes I find a coupon that makes target better. Nutramigen has a savings program you sign up for online that gives you coupons and rebates. It's not a ton but worth doing IMO.

4. I only mix in medela bottles with the cap attached, not a nipple. The cap seems to break up the powder better.

5. Nipple brush and hot water.

6. Poo smells worse but I've not done anything different with diapers and they still come out clean every day.

Eta: be careful with heating nutramigen. Because it has probiotics that aid digestion bc of the mspi, it can't be heated above 100 degrees. The container actually says don't heat at all but I did some research and up to 100 degrees is fine and my lo drinks it better warm. Also if you switch I'd have some bm stored for mixing. Lots of babies don't like the taste of it and I had success mixing it half and half with bm, then 2/3 formula 1/3 milk before going to just formula.

@meesker:

Intake depends on your babe. My 10 month old drinks about 5 ounces of breastmilk per day, and about 20-24 ounces of formula.

Some insurance will cover, but you NEED to have it in writing before you stop nursing. I had a friend wean her baby, because she was going to use N, and then insurance turned on her and wouldn't pay. Ouch.

We use warm water. You can also boil & mix a batch ... store in bottles in the fridge up to 24 hours.

We just use a bottle brush from target. Super hot water. Boil all bottles and parts once a week to sterilize.

Diapers are harder, stinkier with formula.

@meesker: we used alimentum but the idea is the same. That 2.5 times weight thing never worked for us. LO drank between 21-30 oz/ day of formula....her average was about 24.

Target online was the cheapest we could find. Insurance did not cover it even though our doctor wrote a prescription (although every plan is different).

As for the clumps, just shaking aggressively worked for us, they also sell formula mixers if you prefer. And I didn't think formula was any harder to wash that breast milk - just hot water and soap worked fine.

Hope that helps!

@meesker: I can't speak to Nutramigen specifically, but I can answer a couple other questions! (These are all for baby #1 who is now 21 months old)

When L was on BM she was eating about 25 oz/day. With formula it got up to 40 oz/day (some days 45-50!). I think formula is different because of the fat content of BM. I was EPing for L, so it wasn't the bottle stretching her stomach that was the issue, it was definitely the ability of her body to digest BM vs formula.

(No input about Nutramigen cost :( We were lucky and able to use Costco formula)

Oh man, the powder clumps... I forgot about those! We finally got it down to mixing with warm water and a combination of swirling and shaking. Some powders were more difficult than others, Nutramigen might be worse than Kirkland :(

To clean bottle nipples I would just put a dab of soap on my pinky and stick it in the nipple to clean it. I never found a brush that did an adequate job, so I ended up just using my fingers

Formula + cloth diapers is no big deal. I got a cheap $1 drywall compound scraper from Home Depot to keep by the toilet to scrape the poop into the toilet. Afterwards I would use toilet paper to clean it off, and then wash it with soap in the sink. I did need the diaper sprayer every once in a while for particularly bad ones, but you *could* get away without having one if you needed to

I'll fill in where I can (can't answer all as we used disposable diapers) also disclaimer we went with Allimentum because she didn't like Nutramigen but same kind of thing.

1. It obviously depends on your child and how old, but I didn't find that LO ate anymore formula than she did BM, and honestly she would stay fuller longer on the formula. My child was sleeping through the night on formula 8-9 hours by 10 weeks.

2. I found it was cheaper to use the coupons from Similac (I had a hook up and was able to get at least $5 off each time) and saying this our insurance did not cover the cost. It was an out of pocket expense (one that at the end was adding $300 to our monthly budget.) I bought 2 cans a week, one for home and one for daycare until the end. I started switching to WCM around 11 1/2 months old to wean her.

3. I always used room temperature water (kept jug on counter) and did a combination of shake/swirl and most of the clumps were gone. I used a nipple brush that came with the bottle cleaner to get it all nice and clean. I never had issues with clumps.

I am so very nearly over trying to breastfeed. I love nursing D, but I don't know how much longer I can stay sane doing this elimination diet and still stressing about her diapers and weight gain. We've introduced the occasional bottle of Nutramigen and I might be ready to just switch in the next month or so. But I have questions and concerns.

How much formula does your baby really eat. I know the official line is 2.5 is per pound, but I don't understand why. I know babies often eat more formula than breastmilk because of the ease of the bottle/stomach stretching, but does she really need that much more formula than breastmilk. My guess is she only eats between 20-30 ounces of breastmilk a day and my understanding was thus is pretty standard until they wean. I am trying to figure out how expensive the switch really will be.

Second, does your insurance cover your Nutramigen or do you pay out-of-pocket?

Third, where is the cheapest place to buy Nutramigen? Amazon Subscribe and Save or at the store with Enfamil coupons?

Fourth, how do you mix the powder stuff. I feel like I shake and Shake and Shake and there are still clumps.

Similarly, how do you get your bottle nipples clean? It seems so much harder to clean the formula residue out than breastmilk residue.

Finally, how much harder is cloth diapering with formula poo?
