@redsmarties: Yea, 41+6 is the last available day I can choose. Except I'm not sure that they schedule inductions on weekends (maybe I should've asked that! lol) so it may be 41+5 would be my actual last available day. I feel like if I"m doing the induction route, scheduling for thurs/fri would be best anyways bc it would give my husband an extra weekend off work to be with us. So I guess the real choice is, 40+5 or 41+5, probably.

But yes. Hopefully baby comes on her own! I've already been trying to help things along a bit by walking, doing my yoga ball, etc. But I think I need to step my game up in the next week! :)

I had to pick an induction date at my 40 week appointment, but I was given a range of dates between 41-42 weeks. I chose 41+5 because I was so uncomfortable, but also because I wanted to give baby a chance to come on her own. They also didn't start cervical checks until 40 weeks, but even cervical condition isn't necessarily a sign of impending labour.

All in all, I didn't end up needing the induction (had LO at 41 weeks). But everything I was told indicated that waiting until 42 weeks isn't a problem.

That being said...what if you scheduled the induction for 41+6? I think inductions can take awhile, its quite possible baby won't even come until 42 weeks.

Choose what you feel comfortable with, based on the information that your midwives give you. Hope all goes smoothly (and baby comes before you have to worry about inductions!)

I would vote for waiting as long as you can. I was induced at 42 weeks and it was a 60 hour nightmare. Maybe baby will come in that extra week on its own saving you from having to be induced.... Literally wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

@T.H.O.U.: Interesting! Yea I have had no cervical checks at this point. And I presume that even if I had one today my bishops score could very will change before 41 or 42 weeks. I do know they said baby is in a great position for birthing with the way she is laying and her head is very low and "engaged." Also they are assuming I'm dilated some because of cramping I've had but I haven't had that checked. I'll definitely look into other induction options too. I'm really just hoping things don't get that far! I'm only 39+2 today so it feels weird to me to be worrying about induction right now. Like she's not even late yet and I"m talking about evicting her haha.

@Mae: I didn't get an ultrasound to see how big the baby was until they did one to check for my amniotic fluid. They also didn't do a cervical check till adter 40 weeks. I was closed and think so I needed a few rounds of meds to thin my cervix- that's why my induction took so damn long.

@Mae: :) I just wanted to put it out there. My induction was a very positive experience once I got over being mad that I needed to be induced. We started with cervedil and went to pit the next day

@Mae: You may also want to talk to them about other options before just jumping to Pit. Even if you are "soft" you may not be dilated.

@jetsa: Yea I mean I couldn't anyways because they really have no idea! :) I won't even have an u/s until 41+1, and thats just to check fluid levels I think.

@Mae: I wouldn't go by size at this point. My cousin was just induced at 39 weeks bc the baby was "over 9 lbs per the ultrasound at 38 weeks" he was born and was just 7.5 lbs. I don't think ultrasounds are as accurate that late in the game. I don't have any advice because I was induced due to high blood pressure but I had a pain med-free birth and recovery was a breeze.

@T.H.O.U.: Nope on all accounts. I haven't had an u/s since 24 weeks. I asked at my 38 week appointment if they had any guess as to size of LO and they said that because LO measured right at 50% for size at both 18 and 24 week u/s, and because I haven't gained much weight, and my belly is measuring exactly on track-- they expect a "very average" sized baby. But that really anything is possible.

And I have no idea what a Bishops score is? I'm only 39 weeks now so I assume a lot could change in the next 2 weeks regardless. I did ask, IF I had to be induced, how they do that. And they said it depends on my cervix on that date. If it is already somewhat dilated and effaced it will mean pit to start contractions. If it is still closed/thick they will need medication to thin it first. I haven't had any cervical checks at this point, although I'll have one at 40 if I make it that far.

ETA: they did say I could opt for a membrane sweep at my 41 week appointment if I make it that far to help "induce naturally" and I will definitely do that if I make it that far and plan to keep waiting.

Have you had checks to see how big baby is estimated to be?

Also, did they give you your Bishops score to show how favorable you are for induction?

I would go ahead and start researching induction options because you do have options and it doesn't mean you will be started on Pit right away.

I was induced at 41+ 6- and then didn't have LO till 42+1. My LO is/was totally fine. My Dr. and midwives made me wait till the last possible day (even though I wanted to go earlier) because they were hoping my body would kickstart itself in labor before then. I got an ultrasound to test my amniotic fluid levels and had to go in for a few stress tests- but other than that- it was not bad!

So I had my 39 week appointment today and found out that at my 40 week appointment (if I make it that long) I need to tell them what day I want to be induced on, assuming I don't go into labor prior. They allow you to go as long as 41+6, but they do plan a NST and u/s to check fluid on 41+1 if you want to go past 41 weeks.

I had always assumed I'd go to 42. I feel like the "general wisdom" is that babies come when they are ready, usually, and some babies need a bit more time to cook, and that as long as there is no sign of distress from baby or me, going to 42 is safest for both of us.

Also, I'd really like to NOT be induced. I'm hoping for a med-free birth and I've been going to a midwife practice who supports this and does in-hospital natural births with the birthing tub and the whole deal. So giving baby as long as possible to make her appearance appeals to me for that reason.

My concern is that I got a weird vibe from my midwife today that inducing at 41 is more normal than 42. She kept saying things like "well we'd really like you induced before 42, 41+6 is pretty much our limit for what we consider safe to wait it out." etc. And mentioned that a lot of people feel more comfortable with an earlier induction due to increased risks of meconium in the fluid, bigger babies, and placental issues if you go past 41 (although they do the NST and u/s to help assuage the placental concerns).

I guess it just left me feeling like maybe it isn't as safe for baby to wait for 42? I mean going to the "limit of safety" is not something that sounds super appealing to me when I'm talking about my child. And I worry that my reasons for wanting to avoid induction are mostly selfish (i.e. making labor and recovery easier on myself).

I really just want to do what is safest for my baby. But of course she couldn't really give me a definitive answer on what that is. :/ I know no one here can give me a definitive answer anyways. But having to make this choice is sort of stressing me out and I'd love some insight from others on how they've made this decision.
