@Danizaur: Yay T! He looks so cute.

My only advice with solids is to have fun :) I think everyone else covered just about everything. I will also agree that poop is SO much easier now.

No water necessary yet, pureed carrots sounds perfect, and yep start with one meal a day :) My DD was ready (staring longingly at our food and grabbing for it, sitting up unassisted, etc) at about 4.5 months and she took to solids really well! And tbh solids poop is MUCH better than bf poo ;) much less cleanup involved hehe it just smells worse.

@Danizaur: So cute! Looks like he really was ready-- good for you going with your gut!

@abbydabbydoodlebug: I didn't really like the sippy cups I got- I would recommend a small size one though. You want it to be pretty full, so they don't have to tip it back too far, but if it's big (like mine were) that makes it really heavy and easy to drop. After the sippy cup fail, I went to the Playtex straw cups that were recommended on here and after just 2 or 3 tries she got it and we have been on straw cups ever since.

@Danizaur: Good luck! We started 1-2 weeks ago with DD and it's gone pretty well! We started with banana (wasn't a fan) and have tried avocados, peaches, pears, peas, & butternut squash (her fave!). It was super easy to make it myself. I just froze it in ice cube trays, then transferred it to freezer bags after. I need to make more Butternut squash because she ate it all! haha.

We haven't introduced a sippy yet, but will soon. I just need to decide what one. There's way too many options and I get overwhelmed looking at them all. Lol. Anyone have recs for one for a beginner?

@Danizaur: I mean, it was more the smell than anything else, but it was so shocking I stopped solids for a few days because I missed my EBF poops (and because I had issues letting go and accepting she was growing up). But then she started getting constipated which was worse. We started doing prune puree once a day which helped.

A tip I got from dacycare was to mix a tbsp or so of prunes into whatever purée you were giving to help with the constipation. The poop is was mega gross for us too but it helped with the constipation.

I would expect him to only eat maybe a tablespoon worth of purees (tops) in the beginning. And I always gave water when we did solids because I was afraid of constipation. I did it in a sippy (straw cup) and it took a little bit for Xander to figure it out, but I thought it was a good way to get him to used to it.

I actually like the poop much better now! Before when he was EBF he wouldn't poop for days at a time, and then when he did it was always a blow out. It would take like 10 wipes and I had to be so careful it didn't get on anything else, but usually it did. There was so much more of it and it was liquidy. Now it's more like normal poop. 2 wipes and we're done, and way less stress about it getting all over.

Poop will be gross, he might get constipated, his sleep might be disrupted as his tummy adjusts?(all were a surprise to me). We introduced water in a straw cup and always gave him as much as he wanted. We did a loaded spoon and let him feed himself, mixed with blw.

@Danizaur: I felt totally overwhelmed with starting solids too! We did BLW one week before her 6 month birthday. I started offering water in a sippy but she never really took to the sippy cup. Eventually she got the hang of the straw cup and that's been better, but her primary hydration is still breastmilk, even at one year. You will probably add a little water to the purees too, so that helps.

We started doing one solids meal a day, usually around lunch time, I think? Don't expect him to eat very much and remember it's as much about experiencing new flavors and textures as is it about nutrition. Also, if he is EBF up until now.... his poop is going to smell awful. I had heard that, but I was like, meh, her poop is already gross, whatever. No, it's way grosser. Just fair warning. :)

I don't think we are going to make it to 6 months EBF. T is 5 months exactly today and drinking 2 5oz bottles at daycare a day and is barely making it through the day until he gets home for me to feed him. I can't make anymore milk. He's been showing signs of readiness for solids so I guess it's time.

I'm skipping rice cereal and I think I'm going to purée some fresh carrots we have at home for his first food tonight. Do I need to start giving him a little water too? In a bottle? He's not ready for a sippy yet. Also do I just start off with one meal a day? Probably just a mid day lunch to tie him between his morning and afternoon bottle. When do I start more? How much do I even feed him? I plan to incorporate a little BLW but not just yet.

I didn't know how clueless I would be about solids!!
