As mentioned above, the teeth are in the gums, so the gums are pretty hard. The front teeth are only for biting into things, and I cut everything into small pieces because of choking concerns (I would have even with more teeth). Late teethers do tend to lose their teeth late. My DS got his 1st tooth a week before his birthday. My DD got 2 teeth around 10 months. Both of them only had about 8 teeth by 18 months. Dentists were never concerned. He just turned 2 and currently has 12 (still needs all canines and two-year molars). He did not get his first two until 10 months. </p> <p>He went to the dentist at 15 months with only six teeth and the dentist said it's normal for some children to be a little slower. First two at 9 months, then nothing til 13 months. Then she got all the rest through 1-yr molars between 13-17 months. It was kind of crazy. At 17 mo she is def still teething and working on molars. We are not taking her to the dentist at 18 mo cuz she just doesn't have that many teeth! Our pediatrician told us as long as you can mash it between your thumb and forefinger they can eat it. Our ped said his one son got his first tooth at 13 months...he was not at all concerned when our 12 mos old only had 2 teeth.</p> <p>I wouldnt sweat it. She's almost 13 months now and despite a few miserable days where I really thought the next teeth were imminent - nada. I can't see tooth buds when I look at her gums (but it's hard to get a good look!) The doc seemed surprised at this at her 1 yr appt.</p> <p>What did your kid's teeth-growing schedule look like? </p>
