Then you break up the money into different pots of money.<br /> When you are about to spend money, you look only at the pot of money you set aside for that task/thing. If you don't have enough money in the pot, you have to decide to either a) not make the purchase, or b) take money from a different pot.<br /> It really changes your way of thinking. There is no, "Well I can buy this now because I get paid on Friday." Their website has a lot of good intro videos - <a href="http://www.youneedabudget.com" rel="nofollow">http://www.youneedabudget.com</a>.</p> <p>It's zero-based budgeting, which means you budget the money you actually have. We budget based on the last month's income, which is one of the goals of YNAB. We like it because we can see exactly where all our money is going. Now that I'm back at work post-baby I need a budget. I've used mint before, but wondering why people like YNAB and how it works? </p>
