T has always been a big chatter and had mama and dada at a year and maybe another word but it wasn't until around 15 months that he had a handful of words. He would try to have conversations with us with real intonation and everything around 12 mos but we couldn't understand a thing! Speech took off around 17 months and at 18 months he has about 25-30 words and is really trying to say everything we say now. I think he's on the later side speech wise but I also think it's pretty common for boys to develop expressive language more slowly. At our 18m visit our pediatrician said 5-10 words was all he really needed.

Sounds like your LO is doing great.

At 12 months she had 4-5 words and only 2 were consistent. They weren't really til right at 11-12 months though! Now at 14 months she has about 20 words and mimics everything. I think your lo sounds totally on track.

At 12 months my lo could say hi, bye, mama, ball, and no. Now at 15 months shes added things like uh oh, oh no, dog, light, more, all done, thank you, night night. She learns something new everyday.

@scg00387: Ha - I do "gentle" a lot too and today she gave me a bloody nose at the library as she dug her nails into my skin "sigh" ;)

She's almost 12 mo and can say mama/dada, baba, bye bye, hello and gaga (I taught her that turkeys say gobble gobble). But I feel like the mama/dada is inconsistent yet I do find her saying it more when she feels in distress and needs me to come to her. I try to practice words/naming objects with her a lot.

@photojane: No, I'm pretty laissez faire. I don't really practice anything, I don't think! It's just developing naturally. We do read a fair amount, but he plays on his own for a decent amount of time while I read my own book near him too :)

Ok, on second thought, I DO practice "gentle hands" with him and petting the dog and my hair haha.

@scg00387: do you work on words with him during the day? Or just let it develop naturally? I worked on mama and dada with her, but she surprised us with baba and bye bye. I'm wondering what words I should practice with her. Or if I should even. Maybe I'm pushing too hard..? I feel like as a SAHM I should be working on these things with her.. ha. I've never done this before!

Sounds like she's fine. I think typically it is 3 words by 15 months old. Ds is 15 months and says dad, mama, ball, whoa, uh oh, bye bye, hi, and more. We use sign also.

@photojane: he's just started to mimic more clearly at 12 m - he was definitely saying tractor when we would yesterday, and yucky. He says of his own accord, mama, dada, dog, done, more, and ball. I think speech development varies the most widely out of anything, judging by the babies I see on a weekly basis at the play gym, etc.!

ETA we do sign as well, and he is consistently signing more, all done, eat, and milk. We're just introducing help and water now.

Sounds like she is doing great! My LO had mama, dada, and cat down pat (I think) at 12 months. Now at 15 months, she has about 8 words she uses, and she signs quite a bit too. :)

I've never had a baby before, and though I took some early childhood development classes in college, I'm not sure what normal speech development looks like.

I'm not worried about Sadie's speech (I try not to compare her milestones) - really just wondering about what the progression from babbling to speaking looked like for you. Sadie's got mama, dada, baba (what we use for bottle -- how she asks for it), and bye bye in her arsenal of actual meaningful words she can say, but she babbles incessantly... I mean like all day (just like mama... poor dad!). I'm wondering when she will start to mimic more words. What's average for having a solid list of meaningful vocab?

What was your LO's speech like from 9-12m? When did you notice a spike in your LO's ability to mimic?
