@SugarplumsMom: Energy efficiency has a lot to do with proper installation. You can also get extra gases inside the windows, as well as extra coatings on the exterior glazing to give you improved energy efficiency (they do come with extra costs, of course). I don't think that the window frame material has much to with energy efficiency. Beware of getting cheap vinyl windows - they don't always hold up to weather and aging, and can crack sooner than you would like. You have to make sure to find the good vinyl windows (we didn't do much research about vinyl manufacturers because we decided pretty quickly we wanted wood)

We have original 1931 wood windows, but I was actually just researching vinyl replacement windows this morning. Our current windows are so sticky and hard to open, and because we have original storm windows on most of them, there is no use opening them anyway. I would love some easy opening vinyl windows with screens in the spring/summer/fall.

We have old wooden frames that we plan to replace, but I'm having a hard time figuring out what's more energy efficient: aluminum clad wood or vinyl clad, or just vinyl.

The places around me don't give any prices until after a home estimate. I need to clean a lot before then. Argh ... :bummed:

We are replacing our 1970s era aluminum windows with clad wood windows. The exterior has almost zero maintenance and the interior is weird and can be refinished when mood strikes.

I'm not sure what you mean by window frame? We just bought a house that had wooden Windows that had not been maintained and we needed to replace them and do a lot of repair as well. We went with vinyl Windows because they are low maintenance and energy efficient. They have a laminate coating in the inside so they look like wood. Outside, the sill and surrounding the window is wood capped in aluminum and sealed so that water cannot get in and rot the wood which was a major problem with the old Windows. Whatever you do, shop around! We got wildly different quotes from four companies for very similar products.

Ours are vinyl. We put in new windows when we bought our house 2.5 years ago. Before that they were aluminum.

Ours are wood, from 1947. I would go with whatever is most energy and cost efficient if we ever replaced them.
