@Rainbow Sprinkles: Great post. This is what I was trying to articulate earlier. I did not use tanning beds while pregnant but I did stop using tanning lotions because I was more worried about the chemicals.

@MrsTiz: good lord..she sounds like a drama queen. that poor baby.

I tanned a few times in high school for prom (I mean actually only a few times - that was for free, I never wanted to pay for more visits, lol). I don't know what I was thinking, now. I think my friends are stupid when they want a "base tan" to not sunburn. But I keep my mouth shut.

@pui: I commented on it and said "Is it safe to tan while pregnant?"

She tagged a girl that I don't know and they both wrote like 3 or 4 LONG comments on how I am a bitch and they work at a tanning salon and they know there is no issue with it, it doesn't do anyone any harm and they "know their shit" and started spouting off all this information that doesn't even pertain to pregnancy.

I just unfollowed her.

I speficially asked my OB about this.

She said that tanning is never good for you, pregnant or not. However, tanning won't harm your baby. She said if the rays from tanning could "cook your baby" (or basically harm it in any way) then they would also harm your insides when you're NOT pregnant, which they don't. the danger is the damage to your skin.

she did say there is a concern for getting overheated or elevated body temperature while pregnant, so if any of her patients insisted on tanning (which of course she didn't recommend) she said use major fans and drink toonnnssss of water.

I would probably not say anything beyond "Are you sure that's safe?" and when she responds with "Yes" I would just say "Well, okay as long as you have done your research... I wouldn't want anything to happen to the baby!" and leave it in her court.

Unfortunately you can't make someone stop using tanning beds while pregnant... or stop smoking, or drinking, or anything else. I do think a pregnant woman doing any of those things is extremely selfish.

I wouldn't say anything to her, but I would consider not following her anymore on social media sites. I'm betting she'll continue to do cringe-worthy things, and I wouldn't want to feel agitated all the time!

@MrsTiz: OMG NO NO NO!

Tanning beds pose the same dangers as the sun: They emit ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which causes skin cancer. Don't believe anyone who tells you that because tanning booths emit only UVA rays, they're not hazardous to your health. One study suggests that visiting a tanning booth ten times in a year can double your chances of developing melanoma — one of the most deadly types of cancer. Melanoma is the only type of cancer that spreads to the placenta, which could be disastrous for both you and your baby.

Lying in a tanning bed can also raise your body temperature to a level that may be hazardous to your baby, particularly during your first trimester. Having an elevated body temperature during pregnancy — that is, above 102 degrees F, which can happen in a tanning bed, hot tub, or sauna — has been associated with spinal malformations in developing babies.

I would NEVER go tanning while pregnant. A girl I went to high school with was the same way and went tanning during her entire pregnancy (although, she continued working as a bikini barista until she was 33 weeks pregnant, ick). All I know is that my OBGYN told me it was a big, fat no. He also said to not be in the sun for more than 20 minutes.

Pretty much agreeing with everyone else-- it seems like a horrible idea, and I would never, ever do it, but I don't think it's your place to say anything to her. I don't know anything concrete about the risks, but to me it just seems like any behavior that is unhealthy or risky normally is just doubly so while pregnant.

I've never been in a tanning bed, but I was guilty of getting plenty tan outside in the summers in high school and college. Now that I'm smarter I usually will just use some of the daily glow type of lotion to keep total pastiness at bay, but while pregnant, I'll just embrace my paleness. I don't actually trust that those chemicals are really much better than the sun.

i think my main concern would be the heat, as the other ladies mentioned. i've learned to be proud of my pale over the years, but i went to tanning beds a few times in high school, and man...it feels like you're rotating on a spit over an open flame. at least, that's how it felt to me. i would also be concerned about the harmful uv rays, but in the part of the world where i live (saudi arabia), vitamin d deficiency is an everyday thing, so i'm sure there are some doctors here that would actually recommend a few tanning bed sessions for pregnant women. i think we could probably rule a vitamin d deficiency out for this young woman, though! and i can't imagine actually doing it, especially with such frequency!

@MrsTiz: @ladybee: I understand that you should avoid the heat, but in my experience, I can tan in a tanning bed for 20 minutes and not break a sweat or get hot, versus spending a day outside in the Florida 100 degree heat and I obviously get much hotter. Not trying to argue, just curious if there is actual facts behind this?

I'm surprised she still feels well enough to do it. I couldn't take a hot shower without feeling faint. If you do end up talking to her (I don't really have any advice on whether you should or not), also mention that she's risking that mask of pregnancy thing too. If she's vain enough, if might make her stop.

I think I've read conflicting things about tanning while pregnant--I think yeah, 1st trimester is dangerous due to the heat, but for the most part, it doesn't really pose a threat to the fetus, just you.

In general, with tanning beds being as huge of a cancer risk as they are, I think it's stupid to do anytime. I refuse to tan ever again (2nd wide local excision, 3rd mole biopsy at the dermatologist)--don't get me wrong, I sooooo miss being tan, but it's just not worth it!
