Ignoring worked best for us as well, but I remember how frustrating it is. If it makes you feel better, it stopped almost immediately when he had a language explosion and was much better able to verbalize his frustrations and listen to reason.

I like @Weagle's crib idea. No experience with my own yet but when I was a nanny we implemented the "cool down corner" with one family, I picked a corner of the living room, spread a blanket, a few books & some stuffed animals out & when the little girl would throw tantrums I would say "it seems like you are upset, I think you need to cool down" & I would move her to her corner while her brother & I continued to play. After a few times, all I would need to do is ask her if she needed to go cook down & she would either stop or she would go there in her own. If you don't think your son would stay in a corner (heck, if I was pissed enough I sure wouldn't! lol) then I think treating his crib as his safe place/cool down spot would be great.

Following along. LO has started to smack himself in the head when he's throwing a tantrum lately. Once he hurts himself, he gets even more escalated, so I'm not sure if the ignoring is working for us either...

LO used to bang her head during tantrums and sometimes will try to bite during them. Honestly, ignoring it was the best thing for us. Obviously, I made sure that she wasn't banging her head on any sharp corners, but it only took the first good whack of the tantrum for her to realize that it was a dumb idea. She stopped banging her head within a few weeks.

As long as she's not in a position where she could really hurt herself, I'm going to ignore it. It's fruitless for me or DH to get beat up when she's not in a position to listen or understand. She will eventually calm down and we'll deal with it then.

ETA: Is he still in his crib? We have had to use the crib before when LO is too worked up. It's a safe place to put her, and the consequence is being separated from the rest of the family.

DS will be turning 2 on Saturday and has recently fell into a huge tantrum phase. I would normally have no problem ignoring the tantrum, but if you ignore it or walk away he starts banging his head on the floor repeatedly. His tantrums usually involve trying to hit, kick, or bang his head into us and we end up having to restrain him and try to talk him out of it. We are kind of at our wit's end with this all. I try so hard to talk him through the day and help him understand what we need to do next, give choices, but sometimes he can't have a choice in the matter. For example, last night he was washing his hands. I warned him that we would have to turn off the water, he didn't turn it off so I did. Cue the fight: hitting, kicking, screaming.

I know that in the moment when he is freaking out he is too emotionally ramped up to really learn or hear what we are saying, but I feel like he needs something as a consequence for his behavior. We aren't going to spank him because I feel like it is teaching exactly what we want to stop (Mommy is hitting you because you didn't listen to her, DS is hitting us because we didn't give him what he wanted)

What is your child's consequence for aggressive behavior? Any ideas for how to help these tantrums to go away? I just feel like I am going to lose my mind if this keeps going on all the time!
